CLE Golf/Spa Recap and Photos

The 13th Annual Association of Corporate Counsel St. Louis Golf Spa Event took place on Friday, August 26th with 115 members in attendance. 2022 Event Chair, Anthony (Jay) Repaso was happy that they were able to host a live, mask-optional event for members.

"I think it went well," says Repaso. "The spa typically sells out in one to two days, and the Continued Learning Education (CLE) went smoothly with good topics. The people that I played with were really happy and enjoyed the chance to golf on a Friday afternoon. Spa participants were able to enjoy snacks while lounging by the pool and awaiting their appointments."

Timely CLE topics consisted of Everyone's Favorite New Accommodation: Working from Home, Ethics Lawyer Goes Corporate: Q&A for Corporate Counsel, and Crisis in the C-Suite: Do's and Don'ts for GCs in the Heat of the Moment.

Event planners appreciate having three recurring sponsors - Thompson Coburn, LLP, Stinson, LLP, and Ogletree Deakins, which allows for the presentation of such a relaxing and educational social event.
Committee Involvement - Now's the Time to Get Involved
By: Aaron Mutnick
About a year ago I wrote that I: “Came for the resource library. Stayed for the networking,“ and I realized I needed to update that note because I’ve found even more reasons to invest in ACC St. Louis. In the past year, by serving on the Communications Committee, I accelerated my business skills by:
  • working with talented content creators and social media data experts at Q&A Business Solutions (who curate content for our email newsletters that over 200 members open within 24 hours of receiving)
  • strategizing on how to expand our reach through our public relations firm AMM Communications (we’ve been published in the Post-Dispatch and Missouri Lawyers Weekly) - and -
  • learning about other committees (we have 13 in total by the way, and getting involved in their programs -like the Diversity Internship Mentoring Program.

For me, this committee also led to my role as a member of the Board where I have gained valuable experience working on an award-winning, nationally recognized non-profit. The 13 committees have so many exciting programs and opportunities that I may just put serving on each committee on my bucket list. But if serving on all 13 is not for you, give one a shot. I promise you won’t be disappointed. Go here to start the process to learn more.

Lessons for Employers Using Artificial Intelligence
and Automated Decision-Making Software

By: Lauren Daming, Greensfelder, Hemker & Gale, P.C.
The allure of artificial intelligence (AI) and algorithm-based hiring technologies is strong because they are assumed to be more efficient and less biased than human decision-makers. Software vendors guarantee more secure authentication methods, reduced personnel costs, and better surveillance of remote workers. But these methods come with an equal number of challenges: privacy concerns, lack of transparency, and the absence of comprehensive and consistent regulation. As with any new technology, before adopting AI-based software, employers should balance these competing interests, recognizing that the sensitive information collected implicates regulation from a variety of legal fields, from employment to privacy to consumer protection.

Types of technologies and applications

Common applications of AI in the workplace include “chatbots” that screen job applicants, scanners that evaluate resumes based upon keywords, video interviewing software that evaluates applicant performance based upon facial expressions and movements, and testing or monitoring software that measures desired characteristics or skills. These programs potentially capture and analyze a variety of data points, including hand scans, facial geometry, voiceprints, keystroke patterns, facial expressions, video, and images. They can also capture personal information such as an individual’s physical capabilities, emotional or mental state, and protected characteristics such as age, race, or sex.
