A Struggling World

The Climate Environment Action Circle (CEAC)

The Climate Environment Action Circle (CEAC) was part of this spring's Trinity Ministry Fair as one of the five Action Circles of the Justice and Outreach Council. We are excited that a number of parishioners expressed interest in one or more of our various projects or initiatives.

For those of you who were not able to attend the fair, those five initiative areas are: Green Bucket, Policy and Legislation, Solar/green energy, Spiritual Practice in Nature, and Disaster Resilience. Each is facilitated by a CEAC participant.

The LA Diocese is encouraging its parishes to prepare for possible disasters and has shared a Disaster Resilience Plan workbook from which to begin. Those who have expressed interest in developing a Disaster Resilience Plan for our parish will hold their first meeting on one of two dates: either Wednesday, June 19 at 5:30 in the library, or Sunday, June 23 after the 10 am service in the Library.  (The chosen date will be announced via the weekly parish notes but was not determined by the time this needed to be submitted.). We plan to talk about this project further in subsequent Digests.

If any of you are interested in joining us on any of these projects, or if you have any questions about our Circle and what we do, please contact us. We welcome all newcomers.

Perhaps a good read for the month of June which is, as you may be aware, Gun Violence Awareness Month or, more colorfully, WEAR ORANGE month. See y'all in the labyrinth.

Changes to Dinner in Park

The City of Santa Barbara has funded the opening of a brand-new downtown day center that will connect people with much-needed services. Since the day center is opening at the end of this month, the meals in the park will come to an end. Trinity will provide sack lunches at the day center on the 4th Thursday of every month—making the lunches in the morning and serving them mid-day. Our first lunch day will be on Thursday, June 25th.

We will need:

1 or 2 shoppers

3 lunch-makers who will arrive at the kitchen at 10:30am to assemble the lunches, and then head over to the day center (on Chapala and Ortega) to hand out the lunches and hang out with people for a little bit.

1 cleaner-upper to clean up after the lunches are assembled, arriving at the Trinity kitchen at 11:30am.

Bishop Taylor, LGBTQ Episcopalians and allies

joined LA Pride parade June 9

LGBTQIA+ members of the Diocese of Los Angeles and their allies joined Bishop John Harvey Taylor march in the historic L.A. Pride Parade in Hollywood on Sunday, June 9.

“We gathered with our bishop to stand up to injustice, model God's unconditional love for all people and celebrate the beautiful diversity that makes the LGBTQIA+ community so essential and vital to the Episcopal experience,” says the Rev. Christopher Montella, outgoing chair of GLEAM, the bishop’s commission on LGBTQ ministries.

Juneteenth service planned at St. John’s Cathedral

The H. Belfield Hannibal Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians and the Program Group on Black Ministries of the Diocese of Los Angeles invite the diocesan community to a service in honor of Juneteenth at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 15 at St. John’s Cathedral, 514 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles.

Celebrate and Support Justice

Celebrate loved ones by using the envelopes in the pews to recognize a special family member or event.

Turn your memories into a donation to the Justice and Outreach Council. We will use these funds to provide comfort and safety to those in need—food, education for children, assistance to immigrants—any of our neighbors needing support. . . so they can celebrate. Together, these gifts make possible our community of welcome, reconciliation, and service.

There are two ways you can continue to celebrate and support our justice work in addition to your pledges both now and in the future. Send in a check made out to Trinity and simply note “Justice” in the memo line and provide the names of the persons or occasion you want to celebrate. Or donate via Trinity’s PayPal account, select "Justice Fund" and under “special instructions” provide the names of the persons or occasion you want to celebrate.

Thank you to our celebration donors for May!

Land Acknowledgement

We honor and acknowledge the Chumash people, the traditional custodians of this land, and pay our respects to the Chumash elders, past, present, and future, who call this land on which we sit their home. We appreciate their wisdom, their culture, and their presence among us today as the host people of this land. We lament the injustices done to the original inhabitants and the injustices done to this land in the centuries since. We seek the courage and wisdom to heal the wounds of the past and build a better future together, in deep solidarity.
