It's the season of gratitude

and giving ...

... and what better gift than time to enjoy books together as a community! Cary Library is planning a special book event, the 2nd annual CaryBokaflod, based on the Icelandic tradition of giving books to family and friends, and then spending time together reading - perhaps with a mug of hot chocolate at your side!

What Could Be Better?

Carina Murphy, Lexington resident and college student, was so excited last year when she read about Bokaflod, that she decided to get her whole family to do it. "I love to read, so a tradition centered around reading was really appealing," she said.

Connecting Generations

Her extended family wrapped up books in brown paper for the exchange. "It was a lot of fun," said Carina, who said she loved receiving her grandmother's own copy of Hans Brinker (or The Silver Skates).

Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday

Monday Bonus - Our Literary Café

After you enjoy hot chocolate, tea, and treats at Carybokaflod, join us for our Literary Café where host Marjan Kamali converses with novelists Adrienne Brodeur and Nancy Crochiere, to explore how they work secrets, simmering resentments, and family trauma and forgiveness into their brilliant books.

This is a hybrid program. Register to participate online.

November is the beginning of winter and the month dedicated to gratitude. Thanksgiving is a celebration of life’s bounty including family, friends, food, and books. A significant way to give thanks for books is to join the Foundation’s Annual Appeal, that funds the programs and collections that support our diverse Lexington community. Watch your mail for our Appeal letter and donate as your means allow.

The Library is always looking for celebrations that involve sharing books. This December, the Library kicks off Season 2 of CaryBokaflod, a charming Icelandic holiday tradition of gathering to exchange books and enjoy reading them. “Baekur eru frabaerar!” which in Icelandic means, “Books are great!”
