Hear from one of our Alumnae, Teegan Mathey!

My name is Teegan Mathey, I am from Aurora Illinois, and I attended the Chicago STEM Academy in the summer of 2019. The academy helped me to connect with so many wonderful mentors within the energy field and truly solidified a career I wanted to pursue in Environmental Science, specifically in the energy sector. Since the academy, I have completed three internships with ComEd, was selected for the STEM Academy scholarship, and I am now a junior at The University of Alabama majoring in Environmental Science.

In April of 2023, I was selected to serve the Student Government Association on the Executive Cabinet as Director of Environmental Affairs. Through this role, I am able to use the large platform of the SGA to promote positive environmental change through a variety of programming and initiatives. I have been very busy this year, as I want to make the absolute most of this opportunity and help effect as much change as possible.

Pictured above: Teegan Mathey at The ComEd Ice Box Derby this past summer.

Since I’ve landed the role, here are some of the things I’ve been working on:

The first annual “Another Person’s Treasure” drive collected specific items from freshmen in the residential halls to donate to a variety of nonprofits across Tuscaloosa. The initiative aimed to decrease the waste footprint of the university while supporting the Tuscaloosa community. Throughout finals week, the Student Government Association successfully facilitated donations of over 1,500 blankets, towels, and sheets to Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter, hundreds of school supply items to Tuscaloosa County Schools, and hundreds of dorm decor items to Tuscaloosa Habitat for Humanity. The school supplies items included notebooks, folders, binders, pencils, paper, desk and drawer organizational items and more. The dorm decor items included frames, art, shelving, lamps, curtains, mirrors and more.

Applications for the Exelon Foundation STEM Academy Scholarship will open in January 2024.
