This weekend we welcomed a Larger & Looser Abstract Painting Workshop in my studio—so we decided to do a Best of BobBlast! This particular one was selected as a follow-up to last week’s BobBlast featuring Color Combinations.
This Best of BobBlast starts with a quick color study in my sketchbook - the concept is Windows. One of my goals was to focus only on colorful light reflected on a surface wall or floor. I was inspired by the stained glass light shining from inside Notre Dame Cathedral - a side trip during my Workshop on a Riverboat Cruise in Paris. My concept is “Windows.”
My demo starts with a simple and strong graphic design for a focal point of Red. I am using my Goof-Proof Color Wheel, so the dominant color is Blue-Green and the final two colors are pure Spice… Yellow and Violet. I also add White and Black.
My set up includes plenty of one gallon water buckets, big brushes, hand barrier cream and paper towels. The surface is a cradled wood panel, 20x20 inch.
The Demo
Start BIG with just your dominant color Blue-Green - actually, I use a variety of blues to create depth and interest - I have fun goofing around at the beginning. It’s like jumping around in the surf first before swimming.
Let your Dominant Color dry thoroughly before the next step. Now it’s time to work on the Focal Point Color and design. Excited to see where it’s going, I paint in the two Spice Colors near the Focal Point Color. That’s how my wheel works with any subject or technique.
I never make a decision about a painting until I live with it for awhile… at least overnight. I hang it on the wall so I can look at it. I will let it rest and move on to start another painting in the series.
Keep watching the video - there is a Bonus Track!
