Issue 233 | June 16, 2024

Last Wednesday, Richard Mantei delivered an enlightening talk on the challenges and inaccuracies in crime reporting. He highlighted the significant underreporting of crime statistics due to the new FBI reporting system, the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS). Many police departments are struggling to adapt to this system, resulting in crime statistics reported in the news being, at best, educated guesses.

Richard also discussed the difficulties of incarcerating individuals for non-violent crimes in Florida. He demonstrated a worksheet used to assign points for certain crimes, showing how "discounts" are applied to reduce the likelihood of offenders being sent to jail. When asked by an audience member if the issue was due to a lack of beds, Richard clarified that there are plenty of beds; the issue is primarily financial.

We extend our sincere thanks to Richard Mantei for his informative presentation and to everyone who attended.

At the Wednesday luncheon meeting of the Southside Business Men's Club, Angelo Volpe and the charity golf committee presented President Mike Best with a check for $15,771. The funds were raised from the 2024 Crump Kirby Memorial Youth Achiever Program golf tournament. Pictured from left to right are Hal Smith, Mike Slagle, Jepp Walter, and Angelo Volpe. Committee members and Platinum Club sponsors Shela Stallings and LaTanya Jackson of First Federal Bank were also key to the success we had but could not attend last week's meeting. All committee members did an outstanding job. We extend our gratitude to all sponsors, players, and volunteers for making this crucial event a tremendous success in supporting our youth scholarships!

Thanks to all our sponsors this year. There are too many to list, but you can see them all here:
