Not sure what to expect when working in the Snack Shack, nervous that you've never done it before? Check out these thoughts from a fellow concession stand parent...

1. I’m pretty sure I sold $20 million worth of food and drinks from my window alone. This must be how they fund new stadiums.

2. We really really, really, really need to respect waitstaff and retail workers more because sometimes I forgot what Gatorade color the kid wanted from the two seconds when he told me and I turned around to get it out of the refrigerator. Remembering stuff when chaos surrounds you is hard. Service with a smile is harder.

3. 98 percent of people are incredibly nice. Don’t let those two percent ruin it for you.

4. When you are on your feet for three hours, and you are old, you will feel like a Mack truck hit you the next day. Maybe into the day after that, too.

5. Hell hath no fury like a five-year-old girl whose dad won't buy her Skittles.

6. The people who run these types of endeavors are freaking saints and deserve all our gratitude. They run around town trying to procure items that are in short supply right now. They give up entire days to serve, sometimes missing their own kid's big plays or performances. They listen to complaints about how we ran out of Sierra Mist or burgers or Starburst without snottily reminding said complainers that they are just a volunteer, not the CEO of Concessions Inc. I think they should be knighted.

7. Your kids are helping each other. They are buying waters for their friends, sharing chips, loaning them a dollar, and paying a balance when someone is short fifty cents on their debit card. People say crappy things about the way we are raising teens, but their hearts come through when their friends are hungry. It's the sweetest.

8. Nothing tugs at my heart more than when a young boy who towers over me that I haven't seen since 3rd grade shouts, "Thank you Camryn's mom," when you hand him three cheeseburgers. All the feels on how fast time flies.

9. I will never not be amazed by the fact that you can pay for a hot dog by tapping your watch on a little black box. Technology is wild.

10. Your kids are eating a lot of candy. That’s where all their money goes. The end.

Drama Boosters

Are you interested in theater? Is your child in drama? If so, become a Drama Booster member!

You can still sign up for a Family Membership via the Cal High web store.

Your membership contribution allows two adults from your student's household to attend and vote at all of our Drama Booster meetings. The funds we raise through the Cal High web store will directly benefit your students and their experience in the Cal High Drama program this 2023-24 school year! In fact, due in large part to the contributions from past Drama Booster members, we completed a substantial refurbishment of our theater sound system last year and a much needed upgrade to the lights in the theater this summer. Both will enhance the drama experience for all our students (not just drama students) and future audiences of adoring fans!

Our first Drama Boosters Meeting was last week and we discussed our Fall and Spring shows as well as the upcoming Drama Club Pool Party.

Next Drama Boosters Meeting (Adults) – Thursday, October 5th at 7pm in FA 106

African American Scholars Project (AASP)

We are excited to bring back the African American Scholars Project (AASP) this school year. AASP was designed in 2016 to provide Black/African American students with a safe space to talk about their social and emotional well-being in school and in their community. The program saw great success in access to school and college-readiness, and a connection to the school community.

The African American Scholars Project (AASP) focuses on uplifting and empowering Black students, by building community and providing the tools necessary for self advocacy in schools and beyond. The goals of AASP will always be centered in the liberation of Black voices.

Workshop topics for AASP include:

  • Storytelling in the Black Community
  • Mental Health & Wellness
  • Career & Entrepreneurship
  • Holistic College Prep
  • Activism & Social Justice
  • Black Art & Artists

Beginning the Week of September 18th, students will join our partners in this work, Project Sankofa. As a part of this series, the facilitators of AASP will use their vast network to bring in panelists, special guest speakers, and local alumni who are making an impact in our society. They will also facilitate activities to help students build community and networks. Finally, they will provide resources to help students prepare for life beyond high school both academically and socially.

California High School

Tuesdays from 9:45-10:45am, Room P3

School Contact: Trisha Gonzales-Waters, Liaison, tgonzaleswaters@srvusd.net

Your student will be invited to join AASP and given an excused absence, if they decide to attend.  Participating students will need to communicate with their teacher to make-up any work missed from class. Check out the AASP flyer here. Interested students can register via this link.

We are excited to host AASP in San Ramon Valley Unified School District, as we know the importance of community and network for our students is imperative. AASP will meet every other week. Click here to view the AASP calendar. If you have any questions about AASP, please feel free to reach out to Gertrude Jenkins at gjenkins@projectsankofa.org
