Newsletter

Volume 1: August 24, 2023

Welcome to the K-16 Collaborative: Border Region Talent Pipeline's first newsletter! We thought this would be a great opportunity for us to share what we've been working on.

We held our first steering committee meeting in April. We hosted 2 cross-segment communities of practice (one for computing and one for engineering) in May. We created all of our grant applications and reporting documents. And we are working on a number of regional projects to support your work!

K-12 LEAs:

  • We met with almost all of the districts within San Diego and Imperial Counties and hosted six general information sessions;
  • We've consulted with the County Office of Education for both San Diego and Imperial Counties;
  • We had numerous conversations with the CCGI team, hosted multiple trainings, and are working on resources to support regional implementation.

Postsecondary:

  • We met with all community college partners, and made in-person visits to the 3 universities;
  • The Verified Program process was rolled out for computing and engineering programs;
  • We held a pilot paid internship program this summer, placing 48 computing or engineering college students at local companies. We are pleased to announce that at least 3 students received job offers.

Heather has been a part of the San Diego & Imperial Counties Community College Regional Consortium team for the past 7 years and has worked closely with the K-12 districts and community colleges in a K14 Career Pathways Coordinator role. Heather has created work-based learning activities to promote Career Education awareness for middle and high school students, including classroom speakers, industry tours, college campus tours, and mentorship/internship programs. Prior to working in education, Heather managed mass-market fundraising events in the nonprofit sector.

Verified Programs

Applications are now open to become a Verified Program for engineering and/or computing (for both San Diego and Imperial Counties).

Through an employer-led process, educational programs will be verified if they demonstrate they are meeting or exceeding industry expectations in five key areas. Programs that meet these standards are publicly recognized as Verified Programs of Talent (formerly called ‘Preferred Providers’). All applicants will receive feedback from employers after the review process.

For more information about the process, past or upcoming meetings, and additional resources, visit the SDREDC website or contact Heather.
