Team Stedman!
As we step into the Winter Break, I am reflecting on what a beautiful week this was. We got to see a terrific holiday Moosical from our 3rd Graders, we enjoyed Spirit Week with fun outfits and accessories, and we closed out the year with a lot of smiles and joy. I am so thankful for that.
Just a few things for me to share in my final newsletter. First, good luck to our Basketball team! They are participating in a tournament tomorrow morning, and are coming off a win yesterday against Academy 360. Go Stedman!
We know that reading is perhaps the best building block for our young learners. We hope you can participate in the Read-athon over the break! (See below for more details)
Illness has taken over the city, and we know many of you have been impacted. I wanted to share that our building will have a special cleaning crew here over the break to deep clean. Please continue to remind your students about good hygiene practices as we being the new year.
Make sure your calendar is marked for Stedman students to return on Thursday, January 4th. This is different than other DPS Schools, so please be aware of the date.
I am excited to share with our community that we will have a special guest leader in our building next semester to support the incredible work of Ms. Robbin Trotter. Many of you may remember Greta Martinez who led us through our last leadership transition - she became a trusted and valued partner through that time. She will return to support Ms. Trotter a few days a week in the new year, and we are excited to welcome her and her extensive experience in DPS back to Stedman.
Finally, THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I am so grateful for the opportunities you have given me to learn and grow with you and your babies. This journey made me a different person, father, husband, friend, and leader. Your babies have taught me patience, to always smile, to navigate as a learner, and that happiness lives within, not externally. Our children are our most significant opportunity for equity in action. They are the agents of change that will transform the WORLD. I am confident they do just that because they have forever changed me.

A medida que nos acercamos a las vacaciones de invierno, reflexiono sobre lo hermosa que fue esta semana. Pudimos ver un fantástico Moosical navideño de parte de nuestros alumnos de 3er grado, disfrutamos de la Semana del Espíritu con divertidos atuendos y accesorios, y cerramos el año con muchas sonrisas y alegría. Estoy muy agradecido por eso.
Sólo algunas cosas para compartir en mi boletín final. Primero, ¡buena suerte a nuestro equipo de baloncesto! Participarán en un torneo mañana por la mañana y ayer ganaron contra Academy 360. ¡Vamos, Stedman!
Sabemos que la lectura es quizás el mejor componente básico para nuestros jóvenes estudiantes. ¡Esperamos que pueda participar en el Read-athon durante las vacaciones! (Ver más abajo para más detalles)
La enfermedad se ha apoderado de la ciudad y sabemos que muchos de ustedes se han visto afectados. Quería compartirles que nuestro edificio tendrá un equipo de limpieza especial aquí durante las vacaciones para realizar una limpieza profunda. Dear Families,
It has been an honor getting to join your Stedman family this year, and I am very much looking forward to shifting into my new role as your Interim Principal in January. Though I have only been here a short time, it is clear to me how special this community is. You value equity and inclusion in everything you do, and you care deeply about our children, staff, and school. I share this with you all, and I am excited to work together as we "get better at getting better".
I have been fortunate to learn so much from Mr. Atkins this year, and I know he's left a big imprint on all of us. While no one can fill his shoes, I know that I also have some pretty incredible shoes of my own. I will carry his passion and values into the rest of our school year and will be making sure we are intentional about holding our students and team members to high expectations as we navigate this transition. While some things may start to look or feel a little different - as happens with all change - I hope you know that our goals are still the same. I want our children to thrive. I plan to share more with you in the new year, but please know that my door is always open. I look forward to getting to know you better and continuing to support the academic and social-emotional success of every Stedman learner.

Ha sido un honor unirme a su familia Stedman este año y tengo muchas ganas de asumir mi nuevo rol como director interino en enero. Aunque llevo poco tiempo aquí, tengo claro lo especial que es esta comunidad. Valoras la equidad y la inclusión en todo lo que haces y te preocupas profundamente por nuestros niños, el personal y la escuela. Comparto esto con todos ustedes y estoy entusiasmado de trabajar juntos mientras "mejoramos para mejorar".
He tenido la suerte de aprender mucho del Sr. Atkins este año y sé que ha dejado una gran huella en todos nosotros. Si bien nadie puede ocupar su lugar, sé que yo también tengo unos zapatos propios bastante increíbles. Llevaré su pasión y sus valores durante el resto de nuestro año escolar y me aseguraré de que tengamos la intención de mantener altas expectativas para nuestros estudiantes y miembros del equipo mientras navegamos por esta transición. STEDMAN WINTER READ-ATHON!!
Got plans over Winter Break? PTA is sponsoring a Winter Break Read-athon! Students who read the most minutes during December 18 - January 3rd for the chance to win a Pizza Party for your class courtesy of PTA! Teachers will also receive a gift card for the class with the most minutes read. Reading to young students counts! Return this form Winter Read-athon to teachers between Jan 4-11th. PROGRAMMING UPDATE FOR 4/5 | |

Dear Families in 4th and 5th Grade,
As we head into the holiday break, we want to remind you what an integral part of our community you are. We are thankful for the young leaders you entrust in our care each day.
Last year, with our school values in mind, we shifted the programming for our 4th and 5th graders to allow for shared time and space across both our traditional English and Spanish Immersion classrooms. We saw many benefits from combined classrooms, perhaps the number one benefit (according to students) being new friendships and relationships that may not have developed otherwise. (This, of course, is a terrific benefit!)
What has become clear, after reviewing data and receiving feedback from our community members and various stakeholders, is that our model isn't perfect. We want to continuously hold our students to high expectations and academic rigor, and we believe there is room for improvement in this area. It is with this in mind, that we will be shifting the program model for 4th and 5th Grade students on January 22nd. Classrooms will move to a slightly more traditional model based on grade level and language program, but there will be several hours a day where students will still have the opportunity to be in combined spaces. We recognize the importance of the relationships that have formed and want to honor that as well.
We know you must have many questions, and we certainly will share more details about what this shift will look like in the new year. We also know that this adjustment will likely be a sad one for many of our students (who have not yet been told about the shift). We will do our best to listen to and support the students through this change knowing that their academic success is at the forefront of our decision.
We hope this holiday season is a restful and joyful one for you. Your children bring smiles to our faces each and every day, and we are grateful for you!

El año pasado, teniendo en cuenta nuestros valores escolares, cambiamos la programación para nuestros estudiantes de 4.º y 5.º grado para permitir tiempo y espacio compartidos en nuestras aulas tradicionales de inmersión en inglés y español. We would like to hear from parents about your child's experience with the Colorado READ Act and its observed impact.
As you may know, the Colorado READ (Reading to Ensure Academic Development) Act provides funding and a framework for improving literacy outcomes for kindergartners through third graders, particularly those with “Significant Reading Deficiencies” (SRDs) who are at risk to not read at grade level by third grade. The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) has been working with WestEd and its partners to conduct a legislatively mandated evaluation of the READ Act since March 2020.
The survey should take no more than 10-15 minutes to complete, and all responses will be kept confidential.
- We are only asking you to complete the survey if your child has ever been identified as having a significant reading deficiency (SRD) and/or has ever been given a READ plan.
- If you have multiple children in kindergarten through grade 3 who have been identified as having a significant reading deficiency, please complete a separate survey for each child.
