Summer Adventure

It’s the final week of the most engaging and adventurous event of the summer! Come enjoy hands-on fun and
exploration across the lower half of the mountain Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The last day is this Saturday, Aug. 6!

MOUNTAIN HIGHLIGHT:
LIVING HISTORY FARM



Take a step back in time and join us on the Living History Farm for the final week of Summer Adventure.

We have several new chickens and ducks that joined us earlier this summer. They’re continuing to grow, so make sure to see them while you can! You’ll also want to take a walk through our garden to see all the fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers that are growing. The sunflowers are in full bloom, indigo is tall enough for a first harvest for dye, grapes are ripening, and peanuts are blooming and sending pegs to the ground which will mature into our peanut crop this fall!



Our gem mine is also open for you to see what you can find. Did you know that you can even take your favorite gem home to remember your time on the farm?


Remember the farm closes daily at 2:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays of Summer Adventure.
DID YOU KNOW...
…that Gray Foxes are commonly seen on Roper Mountain? A black-tipped tail distinguishes the
Gray Fox from the Red Fox – whose tail has a white tip. Additionally, the Gray Fox is the only member of the canine
family that can climb trees.
Gray Foxes are adapted to forested areas, so our Chestnut Oak Forest suits them well. Their salt and pepper coat helps them hide, and their uncanny ability to climb trees helps them escape predators and other dangers. Acorns, grapes, and persimmons are plant foods they consume. At Roper Mountain, persimmon seeds in their scat are a common sight along our trails. Since their primary food is rodents, foxes are very beneficial to have around.
The Gray Fox is native to South Carolina and can be found in much of eastern North America. Most
biologists believe the Red Fox originated from the European Red Fox, which was introduced into the southeastern United States around 1750.

As you make the driving loop around Roper Mountain or walk the forest trails, be on the lookout for the Gray Fox, their tracks, or dog-like scat.
