The Stone Ridge Public Library will hold its annual election/budget vote on Monday, August 14, 2023, between the hours of 2 pm and 8 pm at the Library.

The election is to fill two four-year seats for the Board of Trustees and to consider the following proposition:

“Shall the budget proposed by the Board of Trustees of the Stone Ridge Public Library, including a tax appropriation of $309,607, be approved?”

Board of Trustee candidates nominated by petition for the four-year seats are Jonathon Lee, Ethan Plank and Victoria Schulte.

For those not able to come to the polling place on Election Day, absentee ballots are available at the Library. You may request them at the front desk. Ballots may be mailed back or returned in person to the Library, no later than 8pm on August 14th.

It's our Fall Book Sale! Hooray! We will have assorted selections of books under Library tents and the Little Book Store will be open. The Stone Ridge Library Knitters as well as a number of local vendors will also be joining us.

In the Library yard

The library will be hosting our first ever Cake Off, a baking competition and friend-raising event, as part of the library’s fall book and bake sale.

Ten amateur bakers from Ulster County will present homemade cakes from scratch for judging by local professional bakers and members of the community. Ribbons will be awarded in various creative categories. All are welcome to attend the event at no cost and enjoy bites of cake as part of the judging.

Like the popular baking competition television program, The Great British Bake Off, the library’s Cake Off will host ten amateur, local bakers who will present their “show-stopping” cake creations to three judges and the general public. Each cake must be created based on a recipe from a baking book in the Mid-Hudson Library system. Cakes will be presented to the judges for consideration, and then made available to the public for tasting.

As well as professional judging over flavor combinations and overall design, a People’s Choice award will be presented to the baker who earns the most votes from the general public. The award categories are all in good fun, and include a variety of creative names, such as “An Edible Artist’s Palette” and “Mixing Bowl Madness”.  

Requirements to enter the Stone Ridge Library’s Cake Off include the following:  

• Must be 15+ years of age 
• Must be an amateur/at home baker, without professional bakery training or experience 
• Must be a resident of Ulster County 
• Must use or clearly adapt a recipe from a book checked out from the Mid-Hudson Library System.

This month local author A. J. Schenkman will join the history book group, Clio's Muse, to discuss his book, Patriots and Spies in Revolutionary New York. Non-group members are welcome to join this book discussion.

first and foremost a civil war that tore at the very fabric of families as well as society. Patriots were determined to separate from England; while Loyalists were just as determined to defeat what they saw as a rebellion. Many do not know that during several critical periods the war was almost fatally undermined by English sympathizers or in some cases opportunistic Patriots. Patriots and Spies in Revolutionary New York is a compilation of twelve stories regarding important moments in New York State's history during the American

Revolution.  

About the Author

A.J. Schenkman is the author of several books about local and regional history. He has written for many magazines, blogs, and academic journals including numerous articles on Hudson Valley history in Ulster Magazine, The Times Herald-Record, Chronogram and on his website, Ulster County History Journal. He is a teacher in Ulster County.

Thursdays, 12-1 on Local Rail Trails

We’re back in action! Join Sarah and your friends and neighbors as we take weekly walks along local rail trails. Each week we will walk from 12-1 on our gorgeous O&W and Wallkill Valley Rail Trails. This social group is a talking and walking group and our motto is: “We are only as fast as our slowest walker.” If you are looking to meet new people and get some steps in while conversing, join us! No pets please. Be sure to check with your doctor before joining this group or any exercise program. No registration necessary-just show up!

*Our walking group is getting pretty big so if you can carpool with friends, great! You are welcome to park at the library and then carpool to the trailhead.*

All walks are weather permitting. Weather cancellations will be posted on the Stone Ridge Library’s Facebook and Instagram page so be sure to check those out if the weather is questionable. Art Exhibit July 10-August 31

Art is the continuous creation of the world and summer is my favorite season. My focus is on interpreting the shimmering natural world in Ulster County by exploring the magic and richness of the land, of growing things and seasonal change. I want to celebrate and interpret growth and renewal. I work in oil outdoors, en plein air and also in water colors interpreting my visual experiences at different times of day and in varied weather conditions. 

Lynne has had artist residencies around the work and experienced many new possibilities. She has been chosen to have paintings in U. S. Embassies around the world through the Art in Embassies Program and has pieces in numerous corporations. She has had three museum shows and numerous solo exhibitions in NY's Chelsea galleries. 20% of all sales from the show will go to World Central Kitchens in Ukraine.

Introduction to Babysitting Course for Tweens and Teens

Saturday, July 29  10:00-1:00

In this Introduction to Babysitting Course, participants will learn interviewing tips, communication skills, ages and stages of young babies and toddlers, safety and first aid tips, and feeding and caring for children, including diaper changing.

A simple test will be administered at the completion of the course and certificates of completion will be distributed. The instructor, Amanda Tucker, is a 1st grade teacher. She holds three teacher certifications including Early Childhood, General Education and Special Education and a Master’s Degree in Literacy. Please Register

On Going Reading Incentive Program with Reading Dragons Collectable Cards

This year we are offering an incentive to read, read, read. Participants earn mythical creature cards as they read and keep a log. Each creature has four stages: egg, baby, teen, and adult. Pick up your tracker and starter cards at the library.

This month, by popular demand, the Cooks & Books group will be cooking once more from any book by

Melissa Clark. The group will meet on August18 at 12:15pm in the library’s Activity Room with their chosen dishes.

The Cooks & Books group is a cookbook group. We meet the 3rd Friday of each month and take turns choosing a cookbook or theme to cook from. Each member then makes a chosen dish to bring to the meeting where we feast and discuss the cookbook and recipes. It’s a whole lot of fun and great food.
