IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: ACA In the News!
|
|
A small group of artists, performers and managers of arts groups had one thing in mind when they formed the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Newport County in the early 1990s: Create a forum where people could share ideas and promote the arts in the region.
Slowly and steadily, they have reached well beyond those simple goals. Nearly 30 years later, the ACA awards scholarships to students pursuing the arts, makes small grants to help artists with projects, recognizes the contributions to the arts made by an assortment of people, serves as a clearinghouse for information for those working in the arts and keeps a regular online calendar of events.

Wear RED since we're celebrating Go Red For Women Day
Ten years ago I suffered a near fatal heart attack and two sudden cardiac arrests which ultimately lead me to the operating room for open heart surgery. After what proved to be a lengthy recovery I returned to my life's purpose of teaching dance. I am ever grateful that after everything I have lived through I am still today out on the dance floor sharing my passion with anyone who wants to "trip the light fantastic!" I am a mother, grandmother, and sister to all my fellow surviors. In celebration I am planning a grand night of dancing with the New Providence Big Band turning up the music, along with our special guest performer, Rhode Island's own Roger Ceresi!

Brunelleschi’s Basilica: The Building of Santo Spirito in Florence
Brunelleschi’s Basilica of Santo Spirito in Florence, Italy, is one of the defining architectural works of the Renaissance. The building of this great church was a perfect historical storm – a celebrity architect; a district of well-known, wealthy and competitive patrons hoping to assert themselves and their families through chapel patronage within the church; an uncertain architectural inheritance left by Brunelleschi upon his death; strong-minded and hard-willed successors of the architect at the worksite; and citywide factionalism championing and repudiating Brunelleschi’s alleged design intentions for the church.
In this lecture, Dr. Rocky will untangle this web of artistic and historical factors that contributed to shaping Santo Spirito based on the findings of his recent book.
Belle da Costa Greene: A Librarian’s Legacy
Belle da Costa Greene (1879–1950) was one of the most prominent librarians in American history. Not only did Greene build one of the most important collections of rare books and manuscripts in the United States, but she also transformed an exclusive private collection into a major public resource
The Morgan Library & Museum will open a major retrospective exhibition on Belle Greene in the fall of 2024. The show’s curatorial lead, Philip S. Palmer, will speak about Greene’s storied life and career, from her roots in a predominantly Black community in Washington, D.C., to her distinguished career at the helm of one of the world’s great research libraries.
The Newport Art Museum is located at 76 Bellevue Avenue

Before you kissed me only winds of heaven
Had kissed me, and the tenderness of rain—
Now you have come, how can I care for kisses
Like theirs again?
I sought the sea, she sent her winds to meet me,
They surged about me singing of the south—
I turned my head away to keep still holy
Your kiss upon my mouth.
And swift sweet rains of shining April weather
Found not my lips where living kisses are;
I bowed my head lest they put out my glory
As rain puts out a star.
I am my love's and he is mine forever,
Sealed with a seal and safe forevermore—
Think you that I could let a beggar enter
Where a king stood before?
