The New Child Care Contribution

Act 76 of 2023 (legislature.vermont.gov), an act relating to child care and early childhood education, tasks the Department of Taxes with the implementation and administration of the new Child Care Contribution (CCC). Did you know that the reporting and remittance of this new payroll and self-employment income tax will begin July 1, 2024?

The Department has begun creating information and guidance regarding the CCC. Visit our website (tax.vermont.gov) and check back often to ensure that you (and your tax preparation clients) are prepared.

Legislative Session Begins January 3, 2024

The Vermont General Assembly will reconvene to begin the 2024 legislative session on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. House and Senate committees meet Tuesday through Friday, with Mondays reserved for study and constituent activities.

Although the Department of Taxes closely follows and engages in discussions in the House Committee on Ways and Means and the Senate Committee on Finance, we pay attention wherever tax policy is discussed at the Vermont State House (statehouse.vermont.gov)

The general public is also able to follow legislative proceedings. To follow a specific committee, go to the Vermont General Assembly’s website (legislature.vermont.gov), click the “Committees” tab, and select the desired committee from the list. To learn more about what each committee is discussing on any given day, please refer to the weekly schedule (legislature.vermont.gov), under the “Committees” tab. These resources provide a daily schedule of meetings, witnesses, topics, bills being discussed, links to live streams and recordings, and a wealth of other interesting information.

2023 Fall Tax Symposium

The 2023 Fall Tax Symposium, hosted by the Vermont Department of Taxes, is now, as they say, on the books! Due to the July 2023 flooding in Montpelier, we moved the Symposium to the Waterbury State Office Complex. Symposium attendees were provided with timely, content-rich presentations, and plenty of face time with Department personnel and fellow tax professionals. But don’t take our word for it! Here are a few comments we received from attendees:

"This symposium was so well put together and I will rate it the best CPE class I've attended in 20 years."

"You all seem to actually enjoy what you do and each other, and it shows."

"The tax symposium was organized, informative and super relevant!"

"It’s apparent that you work well as a team, and that you spent much time preparing for this, and the homemade baked goods were just amazing."

"Your symposiums are very well thought out and executed. The presentations were professional and informative. I particularly like the stats and comparisons piece each year."

"I like the videos. While preparers may know the process, this is a great tool to share with clients."

"I greatly appreciate how personable and professional the whole Vermont Department of Taxes is. We are so lucky to live and work in Vermont and y'all make our lives easier."

"This 2023 Fall Tax Symposium was truly AWESOME."

We appreciated all the feedback we received in attendee responses to our evaluation, and we’ve noted a few suggestions for improvements that we’ll keep in mind for next year. If you attended the Symposium and have not completed the evaluation (forms.office.com), it's not too late.

Links to other information regarding the 2023 Fall Tax Symposium can also be found on the Department's website (constantcontact.com).

We’re genuinely grateful to the 200 tax professionals who chose to spend a day with us, virtually or in person. You all helped to make this day a success.
