January Parent Tip of the Month

Baby Sign Language

The Baby Sign Language trend has been gaining traction, and it may surprise you that this trend can benefit you and your baby. Babies can learn to use their hands in meaningful ways before speaking words. By teaching your baby some signs, you can break down the language barrier and better understand what they need. Do you know how you can get started? You can begin signing with your baby right from the start; however, they may sign back at 6-7 months old, so be patient.

So what are some benefits of teaching your baby sign language? It can lead to fewer tantrums since your baby can tell you what they need before they have the words. It also gives them a head start in learning the language and strengthens their cognitive skills. Most importantly, it can provide another opportunity to bond with your baby.

How to get started with Baby Sign Language:

1.      Use simple signs to describe everyday experiences, like more, drink, or all done.

2.      Don’t cut back on talking. Adding signs while talking helps develop their language.

3.      Ask family members and other caretakers to join the fun. The more exposure to signing, the more likely your baby will learn and use it.

4.      Be consistent. Children learn from repetition and consistency. So whether you use your signs or signs from American Sign Language, make sure they are the same ones you use every time.
