Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

-Colossians 3:1-3-

“Whatcha Thinkin’?”

I’m not asking about the daily questions like what is on your work calendar, or what time the kids need to be picked up from school, or even what’s for dinner. Those questions are all very important and necessary. I am asking you to think deep inside your soul, what are your thoughts? To help us with this, the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Colossians first describes who Jesus is. He states,

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.   - Colossians 2:15-20

Paul then says because of this, direct your thoughts on Jesus. The world, however, says we should focus inward on ourselves asking questions like “How can I be like that person,” or “What do I need to do to get this or achieve that?” The world tells us to start the day with the question “How am I feeling today?”  We are taught to focus our thoughts inward on things like comparison with others, acquiring earthly stuff, and accomplishing earthly achievements. We are told to focus our thoughts on our own feelings. Our bookshelves and inboxes are filled with ideas and tricks for a better life. Not all these are always bad, but Paul says something different - focus our thoughts not inward, but upward.

God in His Word offers something wonderful, a free resource and it is not just reserved for difficult days. Jesus offers himself, the One who reigns and rules over all things for all time, for the good of his people forever.

Maybe today you are having a rough day, let Paul’s words encourage you, and think of Jesus, who He is, and who you are in Him. He does have the best-selling book in history.

So…. “Whatcha Thinkin’?

See you Sunday as we begin our new sermon series “Symbols of Salvation.” This week: “An Old Testament Christmas.” - I can’t wait!

The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
