Canada releases summary of Contract

Policing Assessment


As part of its assessment of RCMP contract policing, the federal government has published a summary of its engagement with contract partners, including local governments. This assessment was mandated in 2021, with engagement occurring throughout Canada in 2023. UBCM members provided input through a March 2023 webinar, and the Local Government RCMP Contract Management Committee.

Immigrant entrepreneurship program becomes permanent


A 2019 pilot program designed to attract immigrant entrepreneurs to smaller communities is now a permanent stream within the BC Provincial Nominee Program. The pilot, now known as the Regional Stream, includes more than 20 BC communities and the Province is expected to open intake this fall to new communities interested in participating.

New vulnerable road user safety laws come into force


New regulations came into force on June 3, 2024 that require drivers to take proper precautions, including new minimum distances, when interacting with vulnerable road users.

How important is outdoor recreation to BC residents?


Results of the Outdoor Recreation Council of BC’s third annual poll, conducted by Ipsos, 56% of BC residents say access to trails and outdoor recreational amenities influenced their current choice of residence. UBCM members, through resolutions, have long advocated for increased funding for enhancement and maintenance of trails, parks and outdoor recreation amenities.

BC Provincial Heat Alert and Response System guide


The BC Heat Committee has released an updated version of the BC Provincial Heat Alert and Response System guide for 2024 to support planning and response efforts related to the public health impacts of significant heat events in BC. The guide includes recommendations to initiate heat planning or to complement the creation of more robust heat response plans.

Climate & Energy Action Awards nominations now open


The Community Energy Association has issued a call for nominations for its 2024 Climate & Energy Action Awards, which celebrates local governments and Indigenous communities in BC working to advance climate and energy action in their communities. Winners will be announced at the Union of BC Municipalities convention in September. Apply by midnight on July 11.
