MONDAY MEMO
5th graders Alice and Antonia worked with egg cartons to create prefix and suffix sorting boxes.
Greetings!

Here we go! There's lots of detail below not only about the Fall Field Trips, but about the Yard Sale and Race Back to School events coming up very soon after! Plus much more, thank you for reading carefully, it helps us so much.

Happy Monday,
Nelia
NOTES
CAR LINE
When dropping off/picking up please remember to use the 2 lane system: the right hand lane is for unloading/loading students with the driver remaining in the car, and the left hand lane is for passing. We realize that our traffic flow can be very slow, and we do our best as staff to move students efficiently. Keeping the left lane clear so that parents can leave when ready is really helpful.

If you plan to get out of the car with your child(ren), or to find a staff person to talk about something, please park in one of the spaces on the south side of the circle, the west side of the house, or the lower field.

We discourage idling engines at Riverside as much as possible. Please turn off your engine when you can.
FAMILY CONTACT LIST
On Friday we emailed parents a draft version of our Family Contact List for this year. We enter all the info by hand (as you did on your forms, thank you!), so mistakes can happen. Please review it (not linked here because the Memo is a public document); let Nelia and Krystal know if you see anything wrong. We will share a final version in .pdf and .xls Tuesday.
FALL FIELD TRIP
4-8th graders will be spending September 13-15 at Siskin-Coutts Camp in Derby, VT, and K-3rd graders will join us there on Thursday, September 14 thanks to parent chaperones and carpool drivers.

FOR 4-8TH GRADE FAMILIES
We expect all 4th-8th grade students to be in attendance Wednesday, September 13 – Friday, September 15. We have a bus to take the students from Riverside to Siskin-Coutts on Wednesday morning and will return by bus on Friday, with 3:30 pick up in the lower field, for gear sorting. We will be staying in cabins with beds and mattresses, and there are bathrooms nearby.

Parents/Chaperones: Anyone is welcome to join us for part of any day we are there, no need to let us know in advance, just show up and join in the meal or activity that's going on. Such a visit, no matter how short, will help you build more relationships with students, teachers, and other parents.

Overnight chaperones: Thank you to those who have let me know you'd like to spend a night or two. Nelia will have detailed schedule and lists for you on Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning, as well as opportunities to sign up to help with specific tasks.

Packing List: (in addition to what will be worn Wednesday) Remember, it will very likely rain during our Field Trip, and we will continue to learn, play, and bond in the outdoors. Raincoats are non-negotiable, spare socks and shoes are encouraged!
  • 2-3 pairs underwear
  • 3-4 pairs socks
  • 2 short sleeve tshirts
  • 1 pair of shorts
  • 1 pair of long pants
  • 1 long sleeve shirt
  • 1 fleece or hoodie
  • warm pajamas
  • bathing suit and towel
  • sleeping bag/bedding and pillow
  • warm hat for sleeping
  • flashlight
  • toiletries (including sunscreen)
  • water bottle
  • extra comfortable shoes
  • raincoat
  • rainboots (optional)
  • book, camera, deck of cards (optional)
  • Wednesday lunch
  • ** please do not bring a cell phone, personal MP3 or video player, video games, or other personal electronic devices. The purpose of this trip is to have positive and high quality personal interactions with each other.

FOR K-3RD GRADE FAMILIES
These students will join us on Thursday, September 14 via organized carpools from Riverside with their teachers, and volunteer drivers. They will depart soon after 8:00 am and return to Riverside before usual pick up at 3:00 pm.

Chaperones: Team Leader Emily Spring is finalizing information packets and lists that will be in today's boomerang folders; you're welcome to email her with any questions. Lunch on Thursday will be PB&J (and allergy alternatives), fruit, and chips. If you have any dietary restrictions please email Nelia ASAP or bring your own items to supplement as needed.

Packing List: booster seat if needed, sturdy shoes, water bottle, sweatshirt, raincoat, morning snack, extra clothes. Lunch will be provided.
YARD SALE
Our 2nd biggest parent-led annual fundraiser is already upon us! Riverside's Annual Yard Sale will be Saturday, October 7. This is a well known event in the broader community, organized by Riverside parents, that raises needed funds for our programs here at school.

Thank you to those parents leading this event! Carrie Stahler - advertising (6th grader Victor and alum Moxie), Nelia Rath - volunteers (2nd grader Cora), Anna Crytzer - donations (6th grader Fiona), Claudia Lechuga - set up and sale (kindergartener Lazlo, 2nd grader Weldon, 5th grader Eula) and Arcelie Newell - food (2nd grader Cassius, 6th grader Phoenix, alum Kingston).

Donations: We hope you are cleaning out your attics, basements, cupboards and closets to donate items. Here is some guidance for donations:
  • We CAN take: linens, books, toys, sports gear, shoes, bags, yard stuff, artwork, office, housewares, antiques, jewelry, tools, pet supplies, holiday decor & crafts, and clothing. Clothing should be washed, wearable, and pre-sorted by size and youth vs mens vs womens; please no tears/rips/stains/broken zippers. We ask that each family limit their daily-wear clothing donations to 2 kitchen-sized trash bags (roughly 13 gal size)
  • We CANNOT take: electronics, particle board furniture, magazines, video or audio cassettes, encyclopedias, car seats
All donations must be brought before noon on the Friday, October 6. Presorting your donations into the categories above is essential to supporting the volunteers who will also be sorting and setting up the sale. Please help us all by doing that at home, or when you bring your donations. Volunteers will be on campus to help accept donations on:
  • Sunday, Oct 1: 11:00 am - 2:00 pm
  • Monday-Thursday, Oct 2-5: 2:45 - 4:00 pm
  • Friday, Oct 6: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Volunteers: We need you! In anticipation of a successful Yard Sale, our goal is that most parents will volunteer to work a shift or two for the event: at a donation drop off time above, setting up on Friday, October 6, or managing or cleaning up the sale on Saturday, October 7, or putting our campus back together on Sunday, October 8. Thank you in advance for any help you can give. You can sign up to volunteer here.
MUMS and BULBS FUNDRAISER
  • Bulb Orders: Remember that you can order bulbs here until September 27!
  • Mums Pick Up: Plants will be available for pick up at the Riverside pavilion between 3 and 4:30PM on Friday afternoon. If you can't make it during that window, and you can't send a proxy, please email parent Kate Renner to make other arrangements.
  • Help Needed: We’d be grateful for some extra hands sorting and labeling plant orders in the pavilion, on Thursday evening or Friday afternoon, please email parent Kate Renner if you can lend a hand.
3-5th GRADE SWIMMING
We had a great first day last Friday, with a focus on establishing comfort, safety, and routines. Please share with Nelia any feedback you got from students about how it felt and what they liked.

Because of our Fall Field Trip and the college schedule, our next swim date won't be until September 29, and then October 13, 20, and 27.

Thank you for the efficient pick up, we appreciated everyone remembering to be at the college at 3:15!

CLUBS
Sean Fortier will be organizing clubs for the year ahead. If you have an idea of an activity you'd like to lead with Riverside students after school, please share with him the following information:
  • activity description
  • preferred age group and maximum number of participants
  • preferred season and schedule (ie, Wednesdays until 5:00 in the winter, or Tuesdays 3:45-4:30 until October 24)
  • any needed materials or cost
  • suggestions for space (kitchen because big tables and sink, pavilion, classroom, etc)
Some clubs led by volunteers in the past have included drama, chess, coding, hiking, and more. Stay tuned for announcements here about club opportunities and how to sign up. These clubs are separate from the regular Extended Day Program and often happen free of charge.

For now, we have one club ready to launch!
  • 3-5th Grade Crazy 8's Math Club will have its first meeting Monday, September 25, from 3:30-4:30.
EAST BURKE FALL FEST AND PARADE
We are looking for a couple of parents to coordinate our participation in the East Burke Fall Festival Parade on September 30. That would involve finding a truck and wagon, planning decorations and candy to toss, being on point to meet families who choose to participate, and then returning all borrowed items after the event. We ask students/families to meet at 9:45 am at the park just north of East Burke village and we are usually done walking by 11:00 am. Please let Nelia know if you can help coordinate.
RACE BACK TO SCHOOL
We want to connect with 1) the outdoors 2) local organizations that have similar missions to ours and 3) more students from the NEK who would be a good fit with our mission. So please plan to register some or all of your family for Race Back to School! No KTA membership is required.

Don't worry, you don't have to commit to staying the whole timeChoose if you want to walk, run, or ride. Choose your laps and fun stations. Choose when you're done. The event is Thursday, September 21 from 3:30-7:00 pm at The Inn at Mountain View Farm.

In advance, seek pledges from friends, family, and neighbors. Dollars per lap? Dollars per point? Dollars per hour? A total gift for meeting a goal? Funds raised by your pledges will go directly to Riverside's growing scholarship/tuition assistance program.

If you don't want to hit the trails yourself, pledge to support someone else!
CATALOGUE FUNDRAISERS
Our parent community is striving to reach their $25,000 fundraising goal, which helps to bridge the gap between tuition and program expenses. (Next month you'll start to hear about the Annual Fund appeal, which also helps.)

This year we are planning multiple catalogue-sale-style fundraisers with the following companies (along with additional in-person events). The variety of campaigns is meant to provide a selection for our growing school community and networks. Maybe you’re not into labels, but your cousin has little kids in daycare who could use them; or maybe you’re not into gardening but you have a neighbor who orders flowers or veggie seeds in bulk each year; or maybe you’re into more active efforts, like the Race Back to School…ideally, there’s something for everyone. Please forward links to friends and neighbors who might be interested!
FORMS FOR CHAPERONES
New families are asked to fill out the Agency of Human Sevices “consent for release of registry information” form, which was included in the summer enrollment forms, as part of our process to clear everyone for volunteering, chaperoning, leading clubs, etc. If there is someone in your child’s life who might join students at a school event, we need them to fill out the AHS form as well. If you'd like an extra copy of the form, please email Krystal.
PROPHYLACTICS
Following Vermont State Law, we have made a variety of prophylactics available to students. They are in the bathrooms that are upstairs in the house, with the products for those who menstruate.
