AGs IN THE NEWS
Alaska Attorney General Treg Taylor announced a lawsuit against a company, alleging that during the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, it sent letters into Alaska "designed to convince Alaskans that they were being offered financial assistance by a government relief program."
The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General urged parents "to take preventative measures to protect their children’s sensitive personal information from being stolen or fraudulently used."
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes announced the formation of a dedicated worker protection unit within the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr announced "the indictment of 61 people in Fulton County following a multi-agency investigation into the violence that has occurred at the site of the future Atlanta Public Safety Training Center and other locations."
California Attorney General Rob Bonta issued the third annual Labor Day Report highlighting the California Department of Justice’s ongoing efforts in this area.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced Owens Community College is the newest regional training provider for the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy’s “OPOTA Close to Home” program. 
District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb announced "the successful resolution of three separate cases involving the financial exploitation of elders and other vulnerable adults."
Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul announced that the Wisconsin Department of Justice Office of School Safety "and all its resources remain available to help keep kids safe this school year."
Hawaiʻi Attorney General Anne Lopez announced that "she has selected UL’s Fire Safety Research Institute (FSRI), a nonprofit research organization to assess the policies and performance of state and county agencies in preparing for and
responding to the Maui wildfires that resulted in significant loss of life and caused about $5.5 billion in damage."
Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita announced he has "filed a lawsuit against MV Realty in an effort to stop the company from negotiating contracts that violate Indiana law."
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison announced that "his Office has opened investigations into 52 student-loan debt-relief companies suspected of violating Minnesota law."
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody announced she and the Florida Association of Crime Stoppers are teaming up with John Walsh from “America’s Most Wanted” and “In Pursuit with John Walsh” to encourage Floridians "to be proactive in helping law enforcement solve cases by reporting information related to crimes."
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced "a Cook County judge sentenced a Chicago accountant, found guilty of defrauding the state out of over $250,000."
Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell released "the Office’s 2023 Labor Day Report, highlighting efforts to protect workers across the Commonwealth from exploitation."
Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes announced that a bipartisan group of 52 states and territories reached an agreement with Google, and more details will be forthcoming. The lawsuit was led by AG Reyes along with California Attorney General Rob Bonta, New York Attorney General Letitia James, North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, and Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti.
The Office of Attorney General Josh Stein, along with the Orange County Criminal Justice Resource Department, hosted "a training for Orange County-area law enforcement leadership and domestic violence service providers on a strategy to help identify domestic violence victims who are at risk of being killed by their partners and act quickly to help them find safety and assistance."
Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford announced his office, along with partner agencies, executed two search warrants resulting in "the seizure of 20,000 doses of controlled substances, counterfeit pharmaceutical products and mislabeled pharmaceuticals."
Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown’s Securities Division announced that it has filed an action against various companies "ordering them to cease and desist violating Maryland law in connection with the offer and sale of investments in two interest-bearing crypto depository accounts..."
AI AND CHILD EXPLOITATION
South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch, Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum, and North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein co-led a bipartisan letter of 50 states and 4 territories urging Congress to study how artificial intelligence can and is being used to exploit children through child sexual abuse material and to propose legislation to protect children from those abuses.
COMBATING HUMAN TRAFFICKING
AND CHILD EXPLOITATION
Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador announced investigators with his Idaho Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Unit arrested a Twin Falls man for alleged sexual exploitation of a child.
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced his office has charged a St. Clair County man with alleged possession and dissemination of child pornography.
Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron's Office of Trafficking and Abuse Prevention and Prosecution (TAPP) hosted specialized trainings for social service and law enforcement personnel focused on missing or abducted children.
GAMING
New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella announced that "after an investigation he finds Win Win Win, LLC d/b/a 'Concord Casino' and its owner, former New Hampshire State Senator Anthony M. 'Andy' Sanborn not suitable to be associated with charitable gaming in New Hampshire due to evidence of COVID-19 relief fraud involving Concord Casino's charitable gaming business."
The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), and the Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) reminded "New Jerseyans to steer clear of illegal sites when betting on professional and college football or engaging in fantasy sports activities related to those sports."
Connecticut Attorney General William Tong warns consumers "about the risks of illegal gambling operators, which target consumers by posing as legitimate gaming platforms."
OPIOIDS AND ILLICIT DRUGS
Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser announced a new statewide educational campaign that "highlights to Colorado youth and their parents that most teens are not misusing prescription pills that could be laced with fentanyl."
Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird shared tips with families to recognize the signs of drug usage and the actions the office is taking to prevent overdose deaths.
Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron announced "the Commonwealth's first-ever Kentucky Opioid Symposium. The conference will take place in Lexington on October 9th and 10th."
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is encouraging municipalities that have not yet joined the national opioids settlement to complete their participation forms by the new deadline of September 20, 2023.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced an individual was "sentenced to 11 to 45 years’ incarceration after pleading guilty to one count of Delivery Causing Death after providing fentanyl to a man who would overdose and die hours later."
Pennsylvania Attorney General Michelle Henry announced an individual was charged with trafficking nine kilograms of fentanyl – or 450,000 doses – among other drugs, into Pennsylvania.
AGO HIGHLIGHTS
Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes shared insights with young Utahns about civics, the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights at the "Read the Constitution!" event at the Utah State Capitol.
