NEAAO Creates

August was a busy month! NEAAO participated in two Westbrook community events, one at Rock Row and another at the Community Center. Children and adults loved visiting our Makers Table with all kinds of crafty items to spark imagination. It was so popular that we will be including it as a regular feature of Together Home is Here.

SOAR begins another year

Students for Opportunity, Advocacy and Respect started a second year of community projects and activities in August. SOAR now has returning members and new members--a perfect combination of experience and motivation. Members enjoyed some late summer kayaking--a first for many--that continues to inspire this group's strong sense of environmental protection and justice. If you or someone you know is interested in joining this dynamic group, contact SOAR program coordinator

SafeNow: An innovative program for expectant mothers and their heath providers

NEAAO received a grant from MeHAF to help broaden maternal health providers' knowledge about Arab and Muslim women's experiences, traditions and concerns about pregnancy and childbirth. NEAAO created several culturally specific resources and services, including a guide to birthing traditions, a safety screening form, and a resource guide for new moms. NEAAO consulted clinical professionals, delivery nurses, doulas and midwives to find out what information is most helpful to them, and to ensure that materials are easy to use. Through this program, NEAAO also launched a support line for Arabic-speaking women who worry about their safety at home, and who need linguistic and cultural support.
