In his 2022-2023 academic year welcome message, Edward B. Healton, Executive Vice President for Health Sciences, reviewed recent achievements and exciting opportunities ahead at the Medical Center. He also reflected on recent Supreme Court rulings and provided resources for the difficult conversations.
Difficult discussions are an inescapable part of higher education. While certain topics naturally generate more divisive conversations, difficult discussions can crop up in courses with a focus theoretically far removed from topics of public controversy. View information from CNDLS to help prepare for discussions on challenging topics, including a list of resources to find constructive ways to engage students.
“Difficult conversations and Jesuit education go hand in hand,” writes Myles Sheehan, SJ, MD, director of the Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics. Georgetown’s Ignatian heritage offers insights to help us communicate in a way that is respectful, encourages reflection, and creates bonds between participants, even if disagreement remains.

Promotions and Achievements
The National League for Nursing will honor retired Navy Capt. Michele A. Kane, PhD, RN, MSN, with the 2022 Isabel Hampton Robb Award for Outstanding Leadership in Clinical Practice. Kane is the director of the School of Nursing’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program.The annual NLN Awards honor individuals and organizations of stature and distinction within nursing education and the wider field of American health care.
Announcements
Georgetown launched the Initiative on Learning, Equity, and Pedagogy (LEAP), a University-wide initiative on Inclusive & Responsive Pedagogy, to achieve the goals of making classrooms more inclusive. LEAP will provide academic units with resources and support to begin the process of creating a more inclusive learning environment for our students, giving them the greatest chance of doing their best work.
Staff are invited to the Georgetown Staff Appreciation Picnic on Thursday, September 8 from 11:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m. (drop in any time) on the Leavey Center Esplanade. This event is held in appreciation of the essential role staff play in sustaining and advancing the university’s mission and values. Please RSVP.
The Department of Human Resources (HR), in partnership with University Information Services and campus leadership, are excited to announce Georgetown HR eRequest, a “one-stop shop” portal in Georgetown Management System (GMS) for staff and AAP human resources processes. HR eRequest enables managers and departmental administrators to initiate, monitor and complete HR processes in one convenient interface. Georgetown HR eRequest is scheduled to go live in GMS for GUMC on September 6, 2022.
The MedStar Health-Georgetown University Research & Education Symposium will be postponed to the spring. If you submitted an abstract for the symposium, please review these options and submit your preference in the form provided by Friday, September 2, 2022.
