JUNE HAPPENINGS

Dear Friends,

Recently I had an eye procedure and as part of my recovery I had to keep my head down for a week. I literally had to look down at all times. No fun for sure, but a week after the procedure, when the doctor gave me permission to look up again, I remember exclaiming, "It's so green!" When I had the procedure the world was still brown and gray, but within that week everything had greened up--it was like waking up in the Emerald City of Oz with the world transformed by technicolor. And that is in fact what has happened--our world has been transformed. You just notice it more if you've been forced to look at your feet for a week! Everything is emerald and lush, and have you noticed all of the yellow Swallowtail Butterflies? We've counted up to 15 at a time on our Miss Kim Lilac! They always seem to be landing on purple lilacs and purple Irises, as if nature knew that that yellow and purple are complementary colors! Nature is, of course, Earth's greatest artist.

Here are this month's highlights:

  • We are getting our second delivery of perennials, shrubs and trees today (Tuesday June 4), so stop by this week for the best selection!
  • Along with our individual annual pots and hanging baskets, we have lots of floor planters already filled with beautiful flowers to make your planter planning easy!
  • Wine Tasting on Saturday June 22 3:30-5:30 with wines from France, Germany, Spain, Italy and Australia
  • Have you ever dined at Sandy's Supper Club in Upper Jay? If so, you have undoubtedly tasted Zach's delicious ciders. Well, we are so excited that Zach is now bottling his ciders for retail under the name "Landscape Paintings", and we have his first label, "Jelly Belly," for sale in the Wine & Spirits shop! Read more about it below, but bottom line is that it is always exciting to support a local and organically produced beverage.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

Jelly Belly Sparkling Cider

We are so excited to be carrying a locally produced sparkling cider made right here in Upper Jay! Jelly Belly is a very special expression of flavors of the Ausable valley. All the fruit is foraged from within a few miles of the towns along the river, Keene Valley to Keeseville. The cider is fermented with

with native yeast and there is no added anything: no sulfites, no sugar, no lab yeast. Just 100% apples. And, just to up the localvore ante, Jelly Belly is aged on lees in used whiskey barrels from local distillers including our other local favorite: Gristmill Distillers!

Castello di Tassarolo

Orsola Gavi

Run by Massimiliana Spinola, L’Azienda Vitivinicola Castello di Tassarolo is situated in the commune of Tassarolo in the heart of Gavi in Piedmont. Made from the cortese grape, this lovely wine is floral on the nose (think chamomile and orange blossom), but it is dry on the palate with a refreshing hint of lime. And that lovely lady on the bottle? Massimiliana's aunt lived in New York City for a while and Andy Warhol painted two portraits of her after they became friends!

Fort Hamilton

New World Dry Gin

The Battle of Brooklyn broke out in a watermelon patch one block from Fort Hamilton’s distillery in August 1776. Fort Hamilton nods to this history by distilling cannonball watermelon alongside freshly peeled cucumber and 9 other botanicals. Distilled from 100% New York-grown corn neutral spirit sourced from Upstate New York and NY Farm Distillery License eligible, this gin is delicious just by itself over ice or in any gin based cocktail. Our new favorite gin!
