Season Watch Newsletter: 1/27/2023

This week's newsletter features a Bobcat sighting (!), White Pine trees, and new phenology workshop dates and locations!

FEATURE: White Pines with John Pastor

It's time to talk about one of my all-time favorite trees: the White Pine! John Pastor, a biology professor at UMD, joined the morning show to talk about his new book, White Pine: The Natural and Human History of a Foundational American Tree. I'm interested in your thoughts- I have a few!

STUDENT AND LISTENER REPORTS

It's a busy week! We have nine reports this week, including a bobcat sighting, the triumphant return of our friends at Pike Lake Elementary, and a game of Snow Snakes at Long Lake Conservation Center! Students in Cohasset and Grand Rapids have started their spring phenology observations, and Eagle View students are asking all the right questions about animal tracks. Plus, a rogue Cedar Waxwing turned up in Baudette!

JOHN LATIMER'S WEEKLY REPORT

Cards on the table: I was a little over-tired while writing this one, so my editorial comments got a bit out of control. Sorry, John: I'm sure the aspens love having you as a neighbor!

Anyways: Ol' "Sentinel of the North" John Latimer was up to his usual shenanigans this week. We learn a new word (marcescensce), discover a litmus test for migratory birds, and learn if January temperatures effect the timing of spring's arrival!

Listen to John's report!

SARAH'S RECOMMENDATION

Things I didn't know I needed: a hawk mood chart. I've recommended the Bird and Moon comics before, but this one made me look at bird faces with a whole new lens!

Enjoy!

I'd like to give an extra-special thank you to Happy Dancing Turtle, our first-ever newsletter sponsor!

Snowshoe Hare (Lepus americanus).

Stop watching the clock, go gawk at a hawk!
