October 2022
Thank you to all the presenters, attendees, sponsors, and amazing organizing staff for an incredible learning experience at the 2022 Art and Science of Pain Management Conference, a joint initiative from FAU's Schmidt College of Medicine and Albany Medical College.

Dr. Julie Pilitsis, Dean and Vice President of Medical Affairs at Florida Atlantic University and Dr. Charles Argoff, Professor of Neurology and Director of the Comprehensive Pain Program at Albany Medical Center in New York, kicked off the 2022 Art and Science of Pain Management Conference. Dr. Charles Argoff presented on Managing Pain in the Addicted Patients. Dr. Janet Robishaw, Senior Associate Dean for Research, Professor and Chair, Department of Biomedical Science at Schmidt College of Medicine, presented on the use of big data, Artificial Intelligence, and EHRs to personalize pain management and asses opioid risk. Making the case for personalized medicine, Dr. Janet Robishaw asserted that each patient comes with a complex history that needs to be assessed to effectively address pain management.

Dr. Adam Demner, Director of Addiction Psychiatry in FAU's Schmidt College of Medicine, and Dr. Anh-Vu Nguyen, FAU Medicine Resident, discussed opioid use in psychiatric care. Dr. Suresh Rajpara, Addiction Psychiatry Specialist, educated the attendees on advances in medication assisted treatment. Madeline Martinez presented her findings on the identification of novel drug abuse medications, specifically on N/OFQ-ONP.

Dr. Clement Hamani, Senior Scientist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Toronto, Canada, rounded out the conference with a discussion of advances in deep brain stimulation to treat pain and alcohol addiction. Dr. Hamani also presented an informative talk on “Translational Research on Deep Brain Stimulation in Psychiatry."

On Friday, October 28, we held an insightful poster presentation highlighting pain, psychology, and addiction. Congratulations to our poster winners!

The Arts and Parkinson's

As Science and the Arts merge together - studies and research continue to emphasize the benefits of music, dance, and other interactive activities benefit those living with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. For those with PD, individuals are encouraged to sing to promote greater breath support. Dancing benefits both AD and PD with balance, its non-verbal communication - it expresses emotion and communicates feeling. The Arts ignite a spark and make the impossible - possible!
hosted by the Marcus Institute of Integrative Health at FAU Medicine.
