Dear Friends,
Another academic year has begun at the Helen Diller Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies! We are excited to update you on our upcoming in-person events, visitors from Israel, academic courses, and student opportunities, and to share a recap of our busiest summer yet.
In a few weeks we will kick off the fall semester with a film screening of 9th Circuit Cowboy: The Long, Good Fight of Judge Harry Pregerson, which will be followed by a panel discussion with Honorable Dean D. Pregerson and Filmmaker Terry Sanders, moderated by Berkeley Law Dean Erwin Chemerinsky. Near the end of September, renowned international relations scholar, Professor Yossi Shain, will join us to discuss his new book: The Israeli Century: How the Zionist Revolution Changed History and Reinvented Judaism. We are also excited to host a year-long virtual series on the future of shared society in Israel (stay tuned for more on that). Additionally, we are grateful to have an amazing 2022–2023 cohort of visiting faculty and scholars from Israel, who will be offering 21 courses across a diverse range of departments.

This summer, 17 students embarked on the first-ever Global Internship Program in Israel, a partnership of the Helen Diller Institute, UC Berkeley Study Abroad, and Yahel Israel. Students interned with non-profit, social sector, and social enterprise organizations. Along with Hebrew instruction, they took a course with former Helen Diller Institute Visiting Professor Rami Zeedan (University of Kansas), an expert on the minority experience in Israel, and participated in field trips to the Negev, Jerusalem, Tel-Aviv, and Northern Israel.
Hear what our first cohort of global interns had to say!
"I was able to meet a lot of social and green entrepreneurs working to preserve and enhance society and our environment. Hearing their stories and their insights greatly added to the research I am already conducting at Berkeley."
— Global Internship Program Participant
"It was very clear to see how knowledgeable and passionate Dr. Zeedan was about the course, and I honestly can not thank him enough for being the person that he is."
— Global Internship Program Participant

The cohort (our largest to date) took classes from Berkeley and Bay Area Law and Business faculty, learned first-hand from experts in the law and technology field, and completed several group trips around the Bay Area, including a tour of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco.
