Vision News and Updates                          March , 2019

Artist: Har lan W. Butt, " A Walk in the Park: the Art of Wilderness"
Wednesday, March 6, 6:45  - 9pm

The Visual Art Society of Texas welcomes Harlan W. Butt as our March speaker March 6, 2019.  He is an artist with over 40 years of experience working in metal and enamel. He specializes in making vessels inspired by the human relationship to wilderness and the natural environment. At the meeting Harlan will present the  historical connection between artists and our National Parks.

"The historical connection between artists and our National Parks has existed since their inception. In fact, artists were fundamental in the establishment of many of the parks including the first National Park, Yellowstone, in 1872. For the past fifteen years, I have been traveling to various National Parks and collecting imagery and data, which I then use to create vessels in metal and enamel that reflect my observations of the geography, flora, fauna and essence of those locations."  -  Harlan W. Butt
During his talk he will also discuss the Artist-in-Residence programs at the National Parks and what they offer for creative people.

Butt was a Regents Professor of  Art at the University of North Texas,  where he taught from 1976 to 2017. He is past President of the  Enamelist Society , past President of the  Society of North American Goldsmiths  and a Fellow of the  American Crafts Council

Harlan Butt's work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in the permanent collections of the Enamel Arts Foundation in Los Angeles, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institute, the Museum of Art & Design in New York City, the Mint Museum of Art & Craft in Charlotte, NC, the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis, Denali National Park Visitor Center in Alaska, the National Gallery of Australia, the Cloisonné Enamelware Fureai Museum in Ama City, Japan and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Harlan lives with his wife Robin, also an artist, in Denton, Texas.  He maintains a studio in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, where he spends the summer months.

More of Harlan Butt's work can be seen at harlanwbutt.com.

March Starts the Renewal of VAST Membership Dues
For 2019-2020 VAST Year

Collection of VAST's June 2019 to May 2020 dues will begin MARCH 1.  Members and new members who pay their dues BEFORE MAY 1, 2019 WILL RECEIVE A FREE ENTRY OF TWO ART WORKS TO THE 2020 Calendar Competition.  Cost to enter the Calendar Competition after 4/30/2019 will be $20 for entry of two art works for consideration.

Such a deal!!  Come prepared to pay your dues at the March meeting.

Pay Dues Online

Want to pay your VAST fees, dues, donations or sponsorships at midnight in your pajamas? If you are a PayPal user, here's what to do:

Open your personal PayPal account and look for the tab saying Send or Receive Money. Send the total amount of your purchases (sponsorships & catalogs for Merging Visions, Dues, VADO Fees, Donations for the Members' Exhibit cash awards, Critique, cash donations of any kind) to the PayPal account of VASTArtsTreasurer@gmail.com .

Please be sure to put in the "note" section of your own PayPal screen:

           (1) your full name, and

           (2) EXACTLY what you are purchasing.

Press the "send" button in PayPal and the payment is on its way to VAST.

PayPal will charge VAST 2.9% plus 30 cents in fees for a transaction. So if you are feeling kind-hearted and generous (and we hope you are!), add a little something extra to cover these fees (after all, you are saving the search for stamps, envelopes, and the midnight walk to the mailbox!). We appreciate all of you credit card holders, and we haven't raised our prices to cover our credit card expenses. Your help in paying extra will help us toe the line on our fees in general.

While VAST  appreciates  your dues money we also would like to hear from you - of your interests, your artwork and most especially, your volunteer interest with VAST!
Now is the Time to Donate for Merging Visions

We have only two meetings to collect the sponsorships donations for the 2019 Merging Visions, and to collect once again for the pre-payment for a catalog ($20 each tax included). Look for the Merging Visions sponsorship forms on the front tables as you enter our meeting. VAST and the Denton Poets Assembly are incredibly grateful for financial support for this important exhibit, which this year will be in the PAAC for THREE MONTHS!!!

Here is the link for the  Sponsorship Form.

WE HOPE TO HAVE A BLOWOUT OF A RECEPTION ON FRIDAY JUNE 7.

"Outside the Box" exhibition at POINTBank Black Box Theater
Visual Arts Society of Texas (VAST) artist Barbara Lindley is being featured with a solo exhibition, Figprint of my Imagination  at the Point Bank Black Box Theater, January 25 - May 2.  Barbara Lindley  was named VAST Artist of the Year for 2017-2018.

At the end of a corporate career that took her all over the world, Barbara Lindley feels she has finally found her niche. While her work as a contract negotiator was challenging and intellectually stimulating, a restlessness lingered as her artistic inclinations were confined largely to cooking and gardening. Her first attempt at retirement left her feeling directionless and unfulfilled and she quickly returned to work. When she retired the second time, she knew she needed to pursue her creative aspirations. She enrolled in a painting class in 2016.

Lindley works primarily in watercolor and enjoys experimenting with non-traditional paper and pigments. Her subjects are varied and include florals, botanicals, architecture, still life, landscapes, and wildlife. She admits that she is still finding her artistic voice and augments that pursuit with continued art instruction and the study of light, composition, and color.

"Every painting is a new lesson, and it's my goal to be a lifelong student."
Barbara Lindley

Festival Hall
Sam Ivie and Jonathan Reynolds
January 11 - March 23, 2019
This exhibit features the photography of Jonathan Reynolds and the paintings and drawings of Sam Ivie. This collaboration featuring Reynolds' photographs along with Ivie's images is the result of a plan to engage in more artist-organized two-person and group exhibits. Painted or drawn portraits have a unique way of functioning with landscape photography. Displayed alongside each other, the mediums of color photography and painting form a dynamic exhibit because of their differences. Both artists use photography, with the main variant being one's work is photography and the other's use of the medium is a means to an end. For Ivie, it is reference material he uses along with imagery he primarily invents; for Reynolds, it is the medium itself.

VADO - VAST Artist Day Out
VADO is our name for Vast Artist Day Out. It's held the first and third Thursday of each month except November and December. VADO has undergone changes this year, but is still a great opportunity to get to know other members and enjoy the fellowship of other artists.  We meet the first Thursday at the Beulah Center at 7801 S-I35 E., Global Spheres in Corinth and the third Thursday at PAAC (Patterson-Appleton Arts Center.) The time is from 10 A.M. until 1 P.M. at the Beulah Center and 9:30 - 12:30 at the PAAC. We bring something to work on and/or to share with our VADO friends. It is not a teaching situation, but we all learn from each other!

The VADO fees for the new fiscal year, June through next May, are $55.

Please email me, Fran Shurtleff, at fmrws@centurytel.net to let me know if you wish to come to VADO in our coming year - or if you have any questions.
