The Scoop on Smith’s

with Smith’s Farm Market and Garden Center

443 Sanders Rd., Benson, NC 27504

Located Near McGee's Crossroads

Welcome back to Smith’s newsletter! Our goal is to share helpful tips on how to care for your (and our) favorite plants and keep you up-to-date on what’s happening on the farm.

November is a slower time on the farm for us. We can take this time to spend with family and catch up on things that sometimes take a back seat to our busy lives in the spring and in the fall. We are excited about the holidays with lots of yummy food and family gatherings! We are also excited about our offerings here at Smith's. During the holiday season we have plenty of local and artisan gift items in our store. You can find local soaps, lotions, kitchen towels, pots, mugs, local coffee beans, houseplants, live wreaths, candy, and so much more.

Gift shopping can be a stressful time for some. Let us help you put together the perfect gift bag or gift basket. We offer complementary gift bags and tissue paper with your purchases here at Smith's.

In this newsletter, we wanted to give a simple gift giving guide to help take the guess work out of shopping. We have included a delicious recipe that we know you will love! We also have some exciting events and workshops coming up. Check it all out out below!

Gift giving guide from a farmers market:

Give gifts that are practical, don't add clutter, and or possibly offer an experience. Giving gifts that are local to your area add a special flair to the gift. A perfect place to find these types of gifts are at your local farmers market. Not only will you find unique gifts, you are supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs!

Some of our favorite gifts to give and receive are local jams and jellies, honey, as well as other food items such as candies and pastries. Locally made soaps and lotions are a perfect gift for anyone in your life. House plants with a pot is always a nice way to bring color and freshness to any room in your house.

Old Fashioned Apple Crisp:

A true classic Fall and Winter dessert. Pop this easy apple crisp in the oven and wait for the delicious smell to flow through your house! Top this delicious crisp with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Ingredients

  • 6 golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other varieties can be used, can also be sliced)
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon, divided
  • 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup old fashioned oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes
  • pinch of kosher salt

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350 F degrees. Butter an 8×8 baking dish, or spray with non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.

In a mixing bowl, add chopped apples, granulated sugar, 3/4 tsp of the cinnamon and lemon juice. Stir to combine, then transfer to prepared baking dish.

In a separate mixing bowl, add topping ingredients (brown sugar, oats, flour, 1 tsp cinnamon, salt, and diced cold butter). Use a pastry cutter to cut the butter into the oat mixture, using a slight downward twisting motion, until mixture resembled pea-sized crumbs. Alternatively, you can use two forks or even your hands to cut butter into the mixture.

Spread topping over apples in baking dish, and gently pat to even it out. Bake 40-50 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly.

Serve warm and enjoy!
