New Humane Police Officer To Serve Armstrong County

KITTANNING, PA – Armstrong County welcomed a new humane police officer on Friday, Dec. 1, 2023 as Susan Clark of Tarentum was sworn in by Judge Chase G. McClister. Clark will investigate cases involving neglect, abuse and cruelty to animals.

Clark completed Pennsylvania's two-week Basic Humane Society Police Officer Course and continuing education class as well as animal care and emergencies’ trainings. She volunteers with Pennsylvania Animal Response Team and Paws Across Pittsburgh.

She is a firefighter paramedic for Eureka Fire Rescue where she has served since 2007. Clark is a veteran, serving as a Staff Sergeant in the New Mexico Air National Guard from 1998 to 2004.

Clark raised two children as a single mom and finds herself wanting to do much good as possible. Her dream is to someday have a safe place for animals to go in emergencies, including domestic abuse.

“I want to be a humane officer because I truly believe that there are far more good folks out there than bad, however, they sometimes need a little help and education. I believe in accountability and justice,” said Clark.

“We are so fortunate to have Susan join us as part of our humane team," said Chris Jirak O'Donnell, who represents Humane Animal Allies and Orphans of the Storm.

Armstrong County humane police officers are unpaid volunteers. The work can be emotionally and financially draining.

Those wishing to support the new humane officer are encouraged to donate for a bullet-proof vest to help protect her. Any amount is appreciated. The total cost is $1,117. Donations are being accepted through Humane Animal Allies, the nonprofit organization that Susan now represents. Its website is www.humaneanimalallies.org.

Humane Animal Allies serves Armstrong County. Its mission is promoting respect and compassion for all living creatures in the hearts and minds of those in our community by supporting the humane program.
