September is Acne Awareness Month

Contributor: Andrea Dell, Wellness Facilitator with the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority

With the hustle and bustle of back to school preparations, most of us are too preoccupied to consider the impact that acne has on adolescents and young adults. Acne can negatively affect one’s emotional wellbeing; and many people with acne experience depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and poor self-image as a result. Poor emotional wellbeing can have a negative impact on the school experience for adolescents. Acne does not need to be chronic or severe to affect an individual’s mental wellbeing. Mild breakouts, or even the occasional pimple can affect one’s perception of themselves. Rest assured, there are strategies that promote healthy skin, which could help to reduce the severity of acne outbreaks.

World Suicide Prevention Day:

'Creating Hope Through Action'

"We can all play a role in supporting those experiencing a suicidal crisis or those bereaved by suicide whether as a member of society, as a child, as a parent, as a friend, as a colleague or as a person with lived experience. We can all encourage understanding about the issue, reach in to people who are struggling, and share our experiences. We can all create hope through action and be the light." ~ World Health Organization

Mental health includes our emotional and social well being. It affects how we think, feel and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, build relationships, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood through to adulthood.

September is FASD Awareness Month

'Uniting Our Strengths: Finding Solutions Together'

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder or FASD is a medical diagnostic term that describes the range of effects that can occur in an individual who was exposed to alcohol prenatally (Canadian Diagnostic Guidelines 2015). FASD is often referred to as a hidden or invisible disability because most people affected have no noticeable physical features. FASD can impair a person’s learning, physical, cognitive, behaviour and development. The effects of FASD are lifelong. Health Canada estimates that nine in every 1,000 children born in Canada have FASD. Below is information about FASD diagnostic services and supports available for caregivers with children/youth who have been exposed to alcohol prenatally.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Source: Government of Canada

"Both the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day take place on September 30.

Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, and to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.

On September 30, we encourage all Canadians to wear orange to honour the thousands of Survivors of residential schools." ~ Government of Canada

Vaccine Resources

Source: Province of Manitoba | Vaccination and Eligibility (gov.mb.ca)

Manitoba currently has bivalent Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for both primary series and boosters. An updated formulation of the COVID-19 vaccine targeting the XBB variant is awaiting approval from Health Canada. Individuals vaccinated with the updated formulation are expected to benefit from a better immune response against XBB and its new variants, compared to current vaccines.

Beginning in the fall of 2023 for those previously vaccinated against COVID-19, Health Canada recommends a dose of the new formulation of COVID-19 vaccine for individuals in the authorized age groups if it has been at least 6 months from the previous COVID-19 vaccine dose or known SARS-CoV-2 infection (whichever is later). If you are wanting to receive a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine sooner than the fall, please speak to your health care provider to discuss further as getting a dose now would impact when you can get the updated formulation.

All people in Manitoba aged 6 months and older are eligible for COVID-19 vaccination.

The vaccine is also available from medical clinics, pharmacies and other locations. Use the Vaccine Finder to find a convenient location. You can make your vaccine appointment at some sites online or by calling 1-844-626-8222.
