Councilmember Ana Ziade, immediate-past Mayor of the City of North Lauderdale, was recognized by her colleagues for her many contributions to the Council and regional collaboration at the Council’s November 21st Board Meeting. Mayor Ziade was appointed to the Council by the Broward League of Cities in April 2021. During her service on the Council, she proved herself a committed member generously contributing her time and knowledge to advance regional collaboration and solutions to the complex challenges facing South Florida and its residents. She will be greatly missed by the Council. We look forward to working with her again and wish her every happiness and success in her new endeavors.

Broward County Housing Master Plan Information Sessions start Tomorrow, December 2nd
Please join representatives from Broward County, the Jorge M. Pérez FIU Metropolitan Center and the Coordinating Council of Broward to learn more about how you can engage on the upcoming 10-Year Affordable Housing Master Plan. This plan will be used to continue to address the county’s growing affordable housing crisis.

2022-2027 SFRPC SOUTH FLORIDA COMPREHENSIVE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY IS NOW COMPLETE
|

The 2022-2027 South Florida Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) has been completed after more than a year and a half of hard work by regional leaders and stakeholders. The CEDS identifies and analyzes key economic challenges and opportunities facing Miami-Dade, Broward, and Monroe counties and its population of 4.7 million residents. The report highlights the key issues and strategic direction the region’s leaders should pursue to advance economic development, equitable access to opportunity, and prosperity in South Florida.

REGIONAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE
WAS A HUGE SUCCESS

The South Florida and Treasure Coast Regional Planning Councils hosted a 7-County Regional Conference on Solid Waste Management Challenges and Opportunities in Southeast Florida. The conference was held on Friday, October 21, 2022 at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.
Featured presentations were given by county professionals and other subject matter experts regarding the current state of solid waste management practice in Southeast Florida, new technologies and “best practice” approaches, and opportunities for greater regional collaboration to manage an ever-growing supply of solid waste. TRANSPORTATION & COMMUNITY RESILIENCE RESOURCES

RESILIENCE DATABASE
The South Florida Regional Planning Council (SFRPC) and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District 6 are creating a regional resilience database of ongoing, future, and planned resilience efforts. The intent of this initiative is to create a one-stop resource of resilience efforts within FDOT District 6 (Miami Dade and Monroe Counties) that is accessible to FDOT Central Office and other FDOT Districts, local governments, state and federal agencies, and community partners. Policies and plans will be assessed with a particular focus on transportation planning and adaptation strategies to maximize information sharing and best practices while furthering municipal, county, regional, and state resilience efforts.

ArcGIS STORY MAP
The Council has also built an ArcGIS StoryMap that creates an immersive story of the public sector resilience network and initiatives in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties at all levels of governance. The StoryMap is a living document that will be continue to be updated quarterly.

RESILIENCE DATABASE INPUT SURVEY
The Resilience Database Input Survey is intended to assist the SFRPC in identifying and collecting resilience related efforts and documents to inform and fuel the creation of this database.

SFRPC EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR JOINS PANEL DISCUSSION AT THE ASSOCIATION OF DEFENSE COMMUNITIES INSTALLATION INNOVATION FORUM
|
Thanks to the Association of Defense Communities (ADC) for another successful Installation Innovation Forum! The event was held the first week in November 2022 in Phoenix and brought together hundreds of military and civilian officials dedicated to enhancing the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) installation and community resiliency. Executive Director Isabel Cosio Carballo joined a panel discussion sponsored by Jacobs Engineering Group, Inc. to discuss the ongoing Military Installation Resilience Review of four South Florida installations with support from the DoD’s Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation. We thank our consultant team Jacobs Engineering Group and the South Florida Defense Alliance for their great work and partnership.

SOUTHEAST FLORIDA TRANSPORTATION (SEFTC) PANEL DISCUSSION
|
Council Members Mayor Joseph Corradino, Miami-Dade County Commission Vice-Chair (now Chair) & TPO Chair Oliver Gilbert III, and Broward County Commissioner Beam Furr joined colleagues from the Southeast Florida Transportation Council to discuss Southeast Florida’s regional vision in terms of mobility, equity, sustainability, transportation, and land use.
This regional conversation followed the conclusion of the successful 2022 RailVolution Conference in Miami on November 2, 2022. Congratulations to the Miami-Dade TPO on the great success of the national RailVolution Conference focused on the interplay of transit, connected mobility options, land use, and development in building great places to live.

SOUTHEAST FLORIDA CLEAN CITIES DIRECTOR NOMINATED TO THE DRIVE ELECTRIC BOARD OF DIRECTORS
|
Alisha Lopez, the Clean Cities Director for the Southeast Florida Clean Cities Coalition was recently elected to the Drive Electric Board of Directors. She is the newest member elected this year and the only representative of the Clean Cities Program elected to the Board. She will serve as a liaison between the Clean Cities Coalitions in Florida and the Drive Electric Florida organization. Alisha will help with the policy goal development and educational outreach.

SFRPC RECOGNIZED AT THE 40TH ANNUAL MEDWEEK GALA TO CELEBRATE MINORITY ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT WEEK
|
The South Florida Regional Planning Council was recognized by M. Gill & Associates, Inc. at Florida’s 40th Annual MEDWeek Gala to celebrate minority enterprise development week. The South Florida Regional Planning Council’s CARES ACT Revolving Loan Fund was honored as a leading capital assistance program for minority business owners in South Florida that had been impacted by COVID.

SOUTH FLORIDA LOCAL EMERGENCY PLANNING COMMITTEE (LEPC)
|
The South Florida LEPC sponsored an eight-hour OSHA Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Course for Miami-Dade's Water and Sewer Department. This course took place throughout October and certified 100 employees of the agency in handling certain hazardous material emergencies. During the month of September, another 200 employees of the agency were certified in similar training.
