Student Spotlight: Erik Blanca-Ladino
Erik Blanca-Ladino, a Music Performance major, was born in Orange County, Calif. and grew up in Puebla, Mexico before moving to Queens, New York. Erik chose to attend LaGuardia Community College, because of our robust vocal music program. Erik is studying music theory, and hopes to compose and direct his own music someday. Erik's dream job would be to work with a world renowned choir or orchestra. Currently, Erik is working with his vocal coach, Professor Lisa Despain, on "Giants in the Sky," from the Stephen Sondheim musical “Into the Woods.” On October 22, Erik will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner,” during the LaGuardia Community Run.

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) Facilitates Global Awareness
Congratulations to English faculty Drs. Olga Aksakalova and Tuli Chatterji, and English major alumna Kathryn Berlin who contributed to an important book in the COIL field, The Guide to COIL Virtual Exchange (2022), edited by founders of the COIL practice Jon Rubin and Sarah Guth. Dr. Aksakalova's piece traces the development of COIL at LaGuardia to show the benefits and strategies for growing this program at urban community colleges. Dr. Chatterji and Ms. Berlin's piece discusses a multinational COIL project "Partition of India" that connected LaGuardia students with peers in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan to tackle the history and literature of the partition, combat nationalism, and facilitate healing. The book will be available at our library soon.

Rainbow LaGuardia Exhibit Now Open
Rainbow LaGuardia, an exhibition chronicling the personal and professional experiences of LGBTQIA+ faculty and staff at LaGuardia through oral history, video, and photography, opened today on the third-floor atrium of the E-building. The exhibition, curated by the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives, will be available for viewing indefinitely. It first launched virtually in June 2020. Rainbow LaGuardia is an extension of Shades of the Rainbow: Generation Z, which explores the coming out stories of LGBTQIA+ LaGuardia students. Shades of the Rainbow is a permanent exhibition on the second-floor atrium of the E-building and may also be viewed virtually. Both exhibitions were major efforts by LaGuardia and Wagner Archives historian Stephen Petrus and photographer professor Thierry Gourjon-Bieltvedt, who worked with student interviewers and photographers to create the exhibits.

LaGuardia’s LGBTQIA Safe Zone Hub Marked Coming Out Day 2022
National Coming Out Day is commemorated annually on October 11 on the anniversary of the second major National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights that took place in 1987. The event is meant to celebrate the authenticity and visibility of LGBTQIA+ people. In honor of its 35th anniversary, the Human Rights Campaign proclaimed “Born to Shine!” as the theme of Coming Out Day 2022. LaGuardia’s LGBTQIA Safe Zone Hub, led by Nathan Tosh, held a session yesterday afternoon for the LaGuardia community to share coming out stories, offer tips, and support others thinking about coming out.

Veterinary Technology Receives ASPCA Grant to Expand Program
Congratulations to Tara Scales, director of the Veterinary Technology Program, for securing a one-year $15,524 grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to expand capacity of the Veterinary Technology academic track with an additional 15–17 students annually. This project aims to respond to the current, high demand for licensed technicians in the New York metropolitan area and the abundance of academically rigorous students at LAGCC who apply but cannot be admitted to the veterinary technology program annually due to program space constraints. Students will learn live animal, canine and feline nursing lab essential skills at the ASPCA of Manhattan while attending and participating in traditional, on-campus lecture and non-live animal learning modules on campus.
