Salty Topics: Symbiosis and Slime: Corals and Their Microbial Partners

The ecological, economic, and aesthetic importance of coral reefs is widely recognized, as is the threat to corals throughout the world from a variety of stresses. Such stresses can lead to loss of the corals' microbial symbionts, namely the algae that lives inside their tissues, resulting in coral "bleaching" and death.

Sandblast on Anna Maria Island will be a Blast!
This Saturday, November 4, the Sandblast Sand-Sculpting Competition takes place on the public beach at 4000 Gulf Drive, Holmes Beach, Anna Maria Island.
S
culpting by amateur teams will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by an hour of judging and awards at 2 p.m.
The sand sculptures will stay in place for the public viewing until Nov. 30. S
pectators can also view an 80-ton exhibit sculpture created by internationally-acclaimed and award-winning Team Sandtastic (

).

Rye Preserve
Set your gaze skyward and search the heavens for a glimpse into the stars. Get a chance to view the skies through a high-powered telescope. Learn how to identify these heavenly bodies, and how you can star gaze at home too. The preserve is closed after dark, but we're giving you a special opportunity to explore with a naturalist guide. Sunset Paddle
Tuesday, November 21
Robinson Preserve
Come out and enjoy the salt marshes of Robinson Preserve. We will take advantage of low tide to watch the sunset from the sandbars of the Manatee River. Bring your camera for great shots of egrets, herons and roseate spoonbills. This is an easy paddle suited for beginning kayakers. Participants must have their own canoe or kayak and safety gear. Evening Tide Talks at Florida Aquarium

Jonathan White, author and Founder/Former Director of The Resource Institute (Seattle, WA) will share his world-wide adventures in ocean research. He has visited five continents where he experienced some of the most amazing tides in the world. With an Inuit elder, he slithered through a hole in arctic ice and gathered mussels in dark cavities left behind by a dropping tide. In China, he witnessed the world's largest tidal bore, a 25-foot wave charging upriver at 25 mph. His newest book explores the mystery:
TIDES, The Science and Spirit of the Ocean.

Annual Recycle Regatta Ready to Sail

Hurry, the deadline is November 3 to enter your team in the annual
Recycle Regatta on November 18 at Cotanchobee Park in downtown Tampa. Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful is sponsoring this fun event that invites groups high school aged or older to create a water vessel using at least 70% recycled materials. Two group members will then race the vessel against other groups. This event celebrates America Recycles Day (Nov. 15) and serves as a reminder that recycling is one of the easiest things you can do to help the planet!

We'll be removing invasive plants and preparing for a prescribed burn.Nope, we're not lighting any matches here, but helping City staff prepare the Preserve for a controlled burn.
