Dr. Worsley's Wise Words

This October, we continue to observe National Hispanic Heritage Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, National Immigrants Day, and National Disability Employment Month.

The month of October is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month which is to raise awareness about the issue of domestic violence and its effects on victims, survivors, families and communities. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV) noted that in the United States, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. Did you know that 33.6% of Virginia women and 28.6% of Virginia men experience intimate partner physical violence, intimate partner rape and/or intimate partner stalking in their lifetimes, according to NCADV?

Community Corrections

Cultural Competency Workshop

Chesterfield County Pretrial Services and Community Corrections (CCS) launched an internal Diversity Committee in December 2020.  Throughout the growth and development of this committee, cultural competency has remained in the forefront of the mission.  On September 9th, 2022 CCS staff participated in an agency-wide Cultural Competency Workshop led by Dr. Worsley.  The purpose of the workshop was to acknowledge cultural biases and create discussion around current events, personal experiences, and encourage others to see things from a different perspective.  The knowledge of cultural competency is valuable for our colleagues, the community served, and the clients supervised.

Health Insurance Enrollment

Health Insurance Marketplace has open enrollment for 2023 that runs from November 1, 2022 to January 15, 2023.

If you don't have health insurance through a job, Medicare, Medicaid, the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), or another source that provides qualifying health coverage, the Marketplace can help you get coverage.  Some helpful tips regarding insurance are:

  • If you have job-based insurance: You can buy a plan through the Marketplace, but you'll pay full price unless your employer's insurance doesn't meet certain standards. Most job-based plans do meet the standards.
  • If you have Medicare: You can't switch to Marketplace insurance, supplement your coverage with a Marketplace plan, or buy a Marketplace dental plan.
  • You may qualify for a premium tax credit that lowers your monthly insurance bill, and for extra savings on out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and copayments.
  • The plans are offered by private insurance companies with a range of prices and features.
  •  Your children may qualify for CHIP, even if you don't qualify for Medicaid.

You can apply for coverage several ways:

  •  Online
  •  By phone
  • With the help of someone in your community
  •  Through an agent/ broker
  •  Through certified enrollment partner websites
  •   With a paper application
