Remembering Frumencio Reyes Jr.:

A Pillar of Leadership and Community

The Northside community and the Greater Northside Management District mourn the passing of a beloved figure, Frumencio Reyes, Jr., who departed on December 5, 2023. As one of the original directors and a longstanding chairman of the District, Mr. Reyes played an instrumental role in shaping its early years, steering its growth and fostering its success until his retirement.

Beyond his distinguished tenure as chair, Frumencio Reyes embodied a multitude of roles – a dedicated attorney, a champion of civil rights, a venerated civic leader and a mentor and role model to many.

Yet, amidst these illustrious roles, Mr. Reyes held his highest pride in his role as a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Memories shared with him at his law office always concluded with his heartfelt recounts of his family’s accomplishments – a testament to his deep love and admiration for them.

His legacy extends beyond familial ties. Frumencio was a beacon for the younger generation, graciously extending guidance and wisdom garnered through a lifetime of experiences. Alongside his wife, Janie, they embraced numerous individuals, nurturing and shaping their paths with sage advice.

Recently, the Northside Festival provided an opportunity to honor Mr. Reyes for his unwavering commitment. During the festival, his grandson, Fransico Castillo, accepted a token of appreciation on his behalf – a moment that symbolized the community’s immense gratitude for his service.

The debt of gratitude owed to Frumencio Reyes for his dedication and service to the community and the district is immeasurable. His absence leaves a void that will be felt deeply. However, his spirit, guidance and impact will forever resonate, serving as a guiding light for generations to come.

Frumencio Reyes Jr. will be fondly remembered and profoundly missed – a testament to a life lived with purpose and a legacy etched in the heart of the Northside Community and the City of Houston.

Four Houston streets share a $10.1M grant

for flashing beacons,

sidewalks aimed at pedestrian safety

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced that the Greater Northside Management District, in partnership with the International Management District, will receive $10.14 million in federal funding through the Safe Streets and Roads or All (SS4A) grant program for a Safe Streets Project in both Districts.

The project corridors were chosen from the recently completed Northside on the Move Capital Projects Development Strategy, a collaborative community planning effort between the Greater Northside Management District and Harris County Precinct 2.

Airline, Jensen and Tidwell were identified as a priority for, and by, the community to improve safety, access and connectivity, and drive economic development in the area and along these corridors. The International District completed a similar capital project development strategy in late 2022.This study identified Bissonnet as a priority for improvement.

Houston Dairymaids featured

in the Houston Chronicle

The Houston Chronicle recently featured Lindsey Schechter, owner of Houston Dairymaids, in a lengthy article. When Schechter launched her business in 2006, the city had no specialty cheesemongers.

Today, Houston Dairymaids has four full-time employees and about a half-dozen part-time employees. The store brings in between 5,000 to 6,000 pounds of cheese and charcuterie each week from makers in the state and around the world. It wholesales to about 300 restaurants, most of them in the Houston area, and serves several hundred shoppers at its store on Airline Boulevard each Saturday for cheese tastings.

Safety during the holidays

Houston Police Department warns the public to stay vigilant and be aware of purse thieves and "sliders"--especially at gas stations. Make sure to keep your doors locked and valuables out of site. Be vigilant in parking lots.

In addition, be aware of "jugging" crooks. These are predators who are looking for shoppers leaving banks, stores, etc. this holiday. Avoid displaying valuables and report any suspicious activity.

If you or someone you know may be a victim of domestic violence, the HPD Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART) pairs officers with civilian advocates to support survivors, provide resources and ensure safety.
