A Higher Note

As I expressed during our sharing last Sunday, I am so thankful for the adults and youth that made the 2024 Choir trip such a tremendously fun time of missions. The students were great and had some great bonding experiences. The adults provided superior chaperone support and helped us keep moving, most of the time ahead of schedule. A special thanks to Mark Hough, our bus driver, and Andy Nicely for pulling our equipment and luggage. They had to be creative with parking and navigation on several occasions. Wanda Melchers, our accompanist, is always amazing. A big slice of our success is because of Beth Meador, who rehearses with us weekly through the year and helps us learn the music. Terry Hough helps us with fundraising each year and does such a great job. I have some pretty wild ideas and I have to thank my wife, Mary Beth, for helping me hone them and dress them up for success. Obviously, she is the perfector of “Bus Bingo” and shops for prizes all year. One can tell, it takes a small army to make this element of our music ministry function. I am grateful for each and every one. Soli De Gloria! -- Chris

Bible Reading Plan

We've discussed the Gospel of Luke the past couple of weeks, and we still have another week of readings in Luke. So let's take a look at Proverbs since we're currently reviewing it again. A few important points from Fee & Stuart (How to Read the Bible Book by Book):

  • This book is a compilation of sayings by more than one author; they are "... Solomon, various wise men, Agur, and Lemuel's mother - gathered and arranged for later generations by someone otherwise unknown."
  • "Their [the proverbs'] function is to offer practical instruction for the young, with the focus on how to live uprightly and well in a society that understands itself to be under God."
  • "Their method is the same as with proverbs universally - to express important truths for practical living in ways that are memorable and thus repeatable. This is done by overstatement, by 'all or none' kinds of phrases, or by catchphrases that are not intended to be analyzed for their precision." In other words, find (and practice) the point of each proverb, but don't feel compelled to take it literally because it can't necessarily be understood that way.
  • Keep in mind that the Hebrew language cannot always be easily translated into English, and this is particularly true in terms of the proverbs. They employee a number of literary features in their original language that do not convey when translated into English.
  • Finally, "It is important to remember that these proverbs functioned primarily in the home to reinforce the benefits of living prudently and well in everyday life; they are not religious instruction as such. Nonetheless, their goal is to mold the character of the young in ways that conform to [Jewish] law, even if the law itself is not mentioned.
