✡︎ Shalom and Good Shabbos and Yom Tov, Friends ✡︎
It's customary to dance with the Torah during the festival of Simchat Torah to celebrate the joy, prosperity and assured posterity that HaShem promises us when we live according to the life affirming spiritual principles He gave to us at Mt. Sinai. We were supposed to adopt these principles and encourage the whole of humanity to do the same.
Devarim (Deuteronomy) 28:1-14 records the list of blessings that people will enjoy if they do, followed by Devarim (Deuteronomy) 28:15-68 that records a long list of curses that will plague people if they don't. https://www.chabad.org/library/bible_cdo/aid/9992/jewish/Chapter-28.htm
Devarim (Deuteronomy) 30:19 condenses this record:
This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.
The death spiral humanity faces today clearly shows what choice we've made. This year, instead of dancing to our death, perhaps we ought to seriously acknowledge our part in making this mess and pledge to make the other choice and then do it.
