Hi, Mia,

Like many of you, I felt sick when I heard the hateful, divisive, and corrupt conversation between LA City Council Members Nury Martinez, Kevin De Leon, and Gil Cedillo and LA Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera. Their rhetoric exemplifies all that is wrong with the self-dealing and corruption of our establishment leaders. I demand each of these leaders resign their positions in full immediately.

As of writing this email, Nury Martinez has resigned her leadership post as President of the LA City Council, but it's not enough. She needs to step down from the City Council entirely, along with all her friends who took part in this abhorrent conversation.

It broke my heart listening to their cruel and violent racism directed at a toddler.

The anti-Blackness and colorism so obvious throughout their hour-long conversation is enraging.

Moreover, their deliberate strategizing to weaken the power of renters and the Asian, Armenian, and Black communities through redistricting and self-dealing appointments is corrupt and possibly illegal.

And to hear them defend a CA senator who faced three accusations of workplace sexual misconduct and was forced to resign ... well at this point it feels like par for the course with these officials.

But we know none of this is new.

UPDATE: Since we drafted this email, my opponent caved to pressure and finally said, "Accountability and resignations are in order." A barebones, bare minimum statement, which still doesn't really take her friends to task for their horrific comments, nor does it call for the resignation of LA Federation of Labor President Herrera.

Just this morning, I told my team that if they ever made comments like what we heard from Martinez, Cedillo, De Leon, and Herrera over the weekend, they'd be gone. We don't have space for divisiveness and hate in this campaign.

THIS is why I decided to run for office. I am seriously so sick and tired of not being able to trust our elected officials. It pisses me off that so many electeds say one thing front of a microphone, but the exact opposite behind closed doors. And it's these backroom, closed-door dealings that have real consequences for our lives. It's why any ambitious plan for change seems to stall at the last moment while those around pay lip service.

It's poison to our legislative system, and until we root it out, our government will continue to rot from the inside out. In these months of campaigning, I've heard over and over from people who are losing faith in our elected leaders. Officials like this cause people to even further lose faith in our system. We can't keep going like this.

We deserve leaders of integrity - ones who don't hide behind hollow weak sauce statements about an "obligation to restore the people's trust and refocus on the issues," without calling for resignations or any sort of real change.

Because that's what my opponent did. She protected her friends by issuing the weakest of the bare minimum statements that I've seen since this all exploded over the weekend.

This kind of insider, self-serving politics has seen it's day in California. And that day is OVER. We need to send them all packing by electing leaders of integrity.

And whether you elect me or not, I won't stop fighting to restore faith and integrity in government. The kind of corruption and hate we heard over the weekend has got to go.

As City Council Member-Elect Eunisses Hernandez said, "Black and brown solidarity forever. Any other position is detrimental to us all." I couldn't agree more. The ONLY way forward is through progressive change to take back our government and make it work for ALL OF US. Not just the corrupt few in power.

DO NOT GIVE UP HOPE. WE ARE NOT POWERLESS. We can make the change we want to see, but we need enough of us to rise up with our votes and say ENOUGH. And I believe the people of AD-52 are ready to do just that.

Restoring integrity to our district by winning this race is well within reach. We need you to help get us there.
