UPDATES & CHANGES:
August is Ministry Month

Sundays
August 21 & 28

NOTE: WE ARE GOING TO PAUSE MINISTRY MONTH FOR ONE WEEK AND WILL BEGIN ON AUGUST 21.

Where are you being called to serve?

Join us beginning August 21 for Ministry Month.

On two Sundays - August 21 & 28 - we'll have the opportunity to learn more about the many ministries and programs we offer at Good Sam - and to sign up to serve and support those ministries: from the ministries that make our Sunday morning worship possible to the ways that we pray, give, and serve one another and the wider community.

Many of our ministries need new and revitalized support. From Sunday to Sunday, you may have noticed the same small rotation of people greeting, acolyting, reading the lessons, and running the A-V equipment.

Ministry Month will allow us to highlight the joy and gift of our various ministries - and to invite you to prayerfully consider participating in that joy and finding the gifts that await you as you serve.

The Lectionary Class
Resumes!

We are very happy to announce that for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, Good Sam is resuming THE ADULT LECTIONARY CLASS on Sunday, August 7 and continues each week at 9:30 AM in the church library.

The Bible is a living document, kept alive by our understanding and putting into practice its teachings. The lectionary class takes a closer look through insightful discussion of that Sunday's lectionary readings. In a complete discussion format, discover what the readings meant to their original readers and what they mean to us today. The class is lay-led and everyone is welcome to join in at any time.

PLEASE NOTE: All other adult, children, and youth formation begins on September 11. Only the Lectionary Class is beginning on August 7, which is also the Sunday we begin our NEW Service Schedule time of 8:15 AM for the early service and 10:30 AM for the late service.

Good Sam Book Group

TONIGHT!
Thursday, August 11
6 PM @ Good Sam

Please bring your own meal.

Our selection for August is Memphis by Tara Stringfellow.

Summer 1995: Ten-year-old Joan, her mother, and her younger sister flee her father’s explosive temper and seek refuge at her mother’s ancestral home in Memphis. This is not the first time violence has altered the course of the family’s trajectory. Joan tries to settle into her new life, but family secrets cast a longer shadow than any of them expected. Unfolding over seventy years through a chorus of unforgettable voices that move back and forth in time, Memphis paints an indelible portrait of inheritance, celebrating the full complexity of what we pass down, in a family and as a country: brutality and justice, faith and forgiveness, sacrifice and love" [excerpt from Amazon description].

Future selections include Gilead by Marilynn Robinson in September, Matrix by Lauren Groff in October, and Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro in November. Please join us!

Grace Point Day

THIS Saturday
August 13
10 AM - 5 PM

The Diocese of East Tennessee welcomes the return of the annual Grace Point Day, an East Tennessee tradition featuring fun activities for adults, youth, and kids alike. Who wouldn’t want to experience just one more day of that summer camp experience, to see the progress made at Grace Point, and to celebrate the continued ministry of Grace Point to the Episcopal community in East Tennessee?

Activities will range from splashing in the pool, hiking on Grace Point’s 280 acres, kayaking to the eagle’s nest, arts and crafts in the art barn, and more. Lunch and drinks will be provided.

Youth News!

A NOTE FROM SINEAD!

I am so excited to resume our Good Sam Youth Programming for Fall 2022-23.

We have all kinds of new ideas and events this fall, and I hope that you will find ways for your family to engage in the offerings. Please reach out to me (sinead@goodsamknox.org) with questions, concerns, barriers to attendance, etc. I am here to help!

  • Club 45 is for youth in grades 4/5. I am looking forward to our monthly events (lunch and activities following church)

  • Good Sam Youth (grades 6-12) will meet 2-3 times a month, mostly for youth lunches following worship, but they will also have other activities like Operation Backyard service days, serving meals at Tyson House @ UTK Sunday evenings, etc.

We will have Diocesan youth activities, which provide our youth a chance to connect with others from across Knoxville and East TN. These events include Happening (high school retreat), New Beginnings (middle school retreat) and various other retreats and events for youth. **The first one is Sept 9-11th for middle/high schoolers at Grace Point!

We will also have a few mission trips, both overnight and weeklong, that are typically open to youth 12+.

We will do Confirmation class for 9-12th graders over the course of the year, with a few meetings, designed to fit your busy schedules while providing a meaningful experience.

There will also be fundraising opportunities to help increase the funding we have for youth programming and mission work.

A very preliminary schedule of some highlighted events includes:

  • August 13: Grace Point Day (lunch, camp activities, fellowship and fun for the family at gorgeous Grace Point!) 10-5. See you there!

  • August 28: Youth Mission Trip Team gives sermons! Picnic, popsicles, party on the pavement after worship! 11:30-1

  • Sept 9-11: ETNYouth Fall retreat (grades 6-12) at Grace Point (https://www.etnyouth.org)

  • Sept 11: Coffee & Conversations will begin 9:30-10:15 for youth grades 6-12, and for parents of children/youth (both in Youth Suite rooms), Sunday School for all ages is running concurrently.
  • Club 45 - 11:30-1 in youth suite

  • Sept 18: Coffee & Conversation 9:30-10:15. Youth Lunch 11:30-1 in youth suite

  • Sept 25: Coffee & Conversation 9:30-10:15. Youth Lunch 11:30-1 in youth suite
  • 6:04 pm Knoxville Episcopal Youth (KEY) event at Tyson House UTK (grades 6-12)

  • Oct 30: will be a Trunk or Treat party after worship!

  • Nov 20: Rise Against Hunger event after worship.

  • Dec 27-Jan 1: Winterlight Retreat for High schoolers @ Kanuga (https://www.kanuga.org/our-programs/youth-conferences/winterlight/ )

And SO MUCH MORE!

I look forward to seeing you all soon!

Party on the Pavement

Sunday, August 28
After the late service

Mark your calendars now for Sunday, August 28 after the late service - we're planning a Party on the Pavement!!

All children, youth, and their families are invited for an informal gathering, right after church. We encourage you to pack a picnic lunch, bring your bikes, scooters, or skates and we'll have some fun. More details will follow soon. Oh, and Popsicles will be served!

Cash in the Plate

The Cash In The Plate For August goes to Tyson House, the Lutheran & Episcopal Campus Ministry
at the University of Tennessee.

Tyson House's mission is to provide opportunities for gathering as community, grounding in worship, growing as disciples, and giving in love. Tyson House has a vision of being a Christ-centered place where all are known, affirmed, and fed. One important part of that mission is Smokey’s Pantry which opened in January 2016 as an effort to help address food insecurity among students, faculty, and staff. This fall we will have at least 3 Good Sam Youth who will attend UTK and plan to be active members at Tyson House. Your contributions will help provide food, fellowship, pastoral care, worship, learning and service projects for the college students who are part of Tyson House community.

You can make an online cash plate gift to the cash in the plate on the Good Sam online giving page. There is an option on the giving page to give to the "Cash in Plate". As always, you may also send a check to Good Samaritan. (Please designate that it is for "Tyson House" in the memo line).
