New to the One Health Conversation? Learn - What is One Health?
One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals and ecosystems. It recognizes the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment (including ecosystems) are closely linked and inter-dependent. The approach mobilizes multiple sectors, disciplines and communities at varying levels of society to work together to foster well-being and tackle threats to health and ecosystems, while addressing the collective need for clean water, energy and air, safe and nutritious food, taking action on climate changes and contributing to sustainable development. The One Health paradigm forges co-equal, all-inclusive collaborations between animal, plant, environmental and human health arenas, i.e. chemical, engineering and social scientists, dentists, nurses, agricultural/horticulturalists and food producers, wildlife and environmental health specialists and many other related disciplines that fall under its purview. The reader can review a compilation of organizations that are actively working to advance the One Health paradigm shift and many additional organizations and individuals that declare support for the concept.

‘The World Has Won’: New International Regulations to
Protect Against Pandemics Finally Approved
June 1, 2024
Author: Kerry Cullinan In: Health Policy Watch
“After two years of intensive negotiations …. the World Health Assembly (WHA) finally passed amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR) and committed to completing pandemic agreement talks within a year….The IHR is a legally binding international instrument aimed at preventing the international spread of disease, and requires countries to conduct surveillance for potential international health threats of all kinds and report those to WHO….The amendments include the definition of a “pandemic emergency” – the highest level of alarm – that will trigger more effective international collaboration in response to a disease outbreak that may become a pandemic. https://tinyurl.com/58ds35tk

No Time to Gamble: Leaders Must Unite to Prevent Pandemics
June 2024. Prepared by Former Co-Chairs of the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, Rt Hon. Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, and H.E. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former President of Liberia. This report calls out the limited progress and leadership's failure to take the measures necessary to transform pandemic preparedness and response. “Disease surveillance extends beyond people and a One Health approach, while more expensive, is essential. Veterinarians, farmers, forestry and wildlife professionals, hunters, and market managers and sellers need to be equipped with training and tools. Surveillance reporting and data systems must be linked up, and measures must be in place to cover loss of income.” P. 12 Re: H5N1 in Dairy Cattle in the U.S……. “The highly concerning bridled response thus far highlights the weaknesses in One Health preparedness and response, with competing interests and approaches from animal health, agriculture, public health, and industry perspectives, and a lack of country coordination and prioritization of health security.(63) P. 27 Calling for priority actions on a pandemic agreement, more finance, and equitable access to countermeasures, the report was released together with a Comment in LANCET including a roadmap to strengthen pandemic preparedness and response in the next year.

Pandemic Preparedness Roadmap:
Integrating Academia and the Private Sector into Public Health Planning
Prepared by the UC Davis Grand Challenges, Healthy Davis Together and the Bay Area Global Health Alliance. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the critical need for collaborative health emergency responses that transcend sectoral boundaries. Despite the admirable efforts within sectors, the responses were largely reactive and deficient in areas crucial for effective health emergency management. The initially ineffective response cast a spotlight on the urgent need for comprehensive pandemic planning that includes universities and the private sector as key stakeholders. Research shows us that a future zoonotic threat is a matter of “when” not “if”, and action needs to be taken now to prepare.https://tinyurl.com/5xh35um4

Women for One Health (WfOH) poster at the Planetary Health Annual Summit, Malaysia, PHAM 2024
May 2, 2024
“Barriers to full implementation of the OH principles were grouped into the following categories: structural, conceptual, governance, power dynamics, participation and representation, and knowledge systems, with mindset being an overarching barrier…… A siloed mindset - not prone to collaboration and rooted in an anthropocentric and medicalized vision of health, poor awareness of the socioecological determinants and the different knowledge systems engaged in ensuring the health of humans, animals and ecosystems - forged the OH concept, and contributed to structural and power dynamics barriers, impeding the full adoption of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles in OH. This resulted in a fragmented, non-inclusive and inefficient OH governance. Moving from an anthropocentric and medicalized vision of health and adopting a socioecological perspective could support the adoption of DEI principles in OH and address conceptual, structural and power dynamics barriers. This could finally result in a more functional OH governance incorporating socioecological perspectives and knowledge systems, and therefore foster prevention and global health security. https://tinyurl.com/yxx8hh7k

H5N1: international failures and uncomfortable truths
June 8, 2024
Editorial In: THE LANCET
“Spillover of zoonoses into human populations stems ultimately from our ways of life and how they shape the human–animal interface. Our diets, our intensive farming practices, our livelihoods, our behaviours, and our cultures. Our exploitation of the natural world and our destruction of the environment. These issues are tractable through interdisciplinary education, intersectoral collaboration, adequate funding, and integrated policies. The concept of One Health, although often acknowledged, is rarely prioritised and operationalised. The result is a missed opportunity to not just respond to pandemic threats, but to prevent them altogether.” https://tinyurl.com/4bdfta8t

PAHO’s One Health Policy: CD59/9
One Health: A Comprehensive Approach for Addressing Health Threats at the Human-Animal-Environment Interface
July 20, 2021
“The aim of this policy on One Health is to foster coordination and collaboration among the different governance frameworks of human, animal, plant, and environmental health programs in order to better prevent and prepare for current and future health challenges at the human-animal-environment interface. Of priority concern for One Health are risks that affect the systems on which society depends—health, agriculture/animal production, and environment. The policy includes six strategic lines of action that can provide valuable guidance for the actions of national health authorities and for the technical cooperation activities of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau (PASB or the Bureau).” https://tinyurl.com/zv2vf7dj

One Health Issues in the News | |
The world is holding its breath as the H5N1 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza story evolves. We haven’t, so far, included much about it in One Health Happenings because most One Healthers are already following it closely, many in your everyday jobs. But we thought to share these items just in case some readers have not been following along. We recently learned that many human health clinicians are not really aware of the wiley virus’s current mutations and infection of mammals, most recently dairy cows and dairy farm workers, and the growing concern that it is a short mutation away from finding a way to jump from one person to another and to become the next pandemic that so many scientists have so long predicted, not if, but when. Waiting to exhale……

“H5N1 is running rampant through dairy cows, putting humans at risk of an epidemic….The bigger picture of this issue related to human health has been repeatedly brushed aside in the past few months. This is a genuine “One Health” initiative, an opportunity for both animal and human health advocates to work together for the betterment of all species. Set politics aside. Plants can take up CWD-causing prions from soil in the lab. What happens if they are eaten?
February 22, 2024
Author: Mary Van Beusekom, MS In: UMN CIDRAP News
Lichtenberg said that research on plants' prion uptake is still nascent. "It's technically challenging because it involves mixing a number of different fields together," he said. "You need experts in plant physiology, animal rearing, and general prion work, and it's somewhat rare."

Cohosted by the Institute for Advanced Social Studies - Spanish Research Council (IESA-CSIC), the University of Córdoba, and the Department of Human Dimensions of Natural Resources at Colorado State University. Pathways 2025 Conference: Human Dimensions of Wildlife -
Appreciating Nature's Benefits
The recreational participant base has changed over time, and, in turn, the popularity of outdoor recreation activities is shifting. Historically, a space that has been focused on hunting and angling, now includes activities such as birding and wildlife viewing, hiking, and rock climbing as popular avenues to engage in natural areas and on public lands. As interest in these activities continues to grow, wildlife agency leadership will need to adapt to help diverse communities connect with and appreciate nature’s benefits in both new and more traditional forms of engagement. The conference focuses on the health and wellbeing aspects of connecting with nature, as well as the benefits that communities gain from engaging in outdoor activities. It will explore complex issues in wildlife management, use of social science, effective communication, and changing landscapes and seascapes due to climate change and land use management practices.
