The week's Torah portion, Shoftim, (Deuteronomy16:18-21:9), concentrates on justice anchored in the holy principles of truth, mercy, lovingkindness, reverence to God, life and liberty. Two verses from the portion highlight this theme:
Justice, justice shall you pursue that you may live and possess the land the Lord, your God, is giving you. Deuteronomy 16:20.
You shall abolish the [shedding of] innocent blood from among you, for you shall do what is proper in the eyes of G‑d. Deuteronomy 21:9
Wisdom and clarity fill the pages of Deuteronomy as Moses schools his flock, preparing them for settlement in the Holy land, Success there will depend on real justice derived from unbiased, righteous courts of law whose judges recognize the value of innocent life from conception until natural death.
The lessons haven't changed, yet today we see what happens to society when they are totally disregarded. We witness the death and destruction resulting from distorted legal opinions and a lack of moral leadership from the bench and government entities who support baby killing enterprises for profit here and abroad.
We remain forever hopeful that each individual soul realizes their birthright of consolation and forgiveness, as Isaiah declares in this week's Haftorah portion:
The Lord has revealed His holy arm before the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. Isaiah 52.10
