Message from OOMPH's New Faculty Director

We are now fully into the swing of the fall semester and I hope you are hitting your stride! I’m personally still working out early semester kinks, but it’s great to be back on campus and see friends, colleagues and meet new staff, students, and faculty!  I’m once again reminded of how fortunate I am to spend some of my best waking hours with the Berkeley Public Health community!

For those who don’t know me, my name is Jay Graham and I am an Assistant Professor in Residence in the Environmental Health Sciences Division. My research is in the area of One Health, involving  humans, the environment and animals, and I primarily study the environmental determinants of antibiotic resistant infections. I have been teaching for OOMPH  since 2018, and  I recently stepped into the role of Faculty Director for the program. It has been great meeting new OOMPH colleagues who have effectively run this program that is reaching public health professionals around the globe.

I want to thank Deborah Barnett and Professor Jack Colford for their support as I learn the ropes of this new role. Berkeley Public Health Online includes more than 40 courses and over 30 lecturers and is continuing to innovate, improve and grow. It’s an exciting time to be part of OOMPH as we consider new courses, involve new lecturers and staff and hire a new executive director. I look forward to working with you, and I hope you will engage with OOMPH as we continue to prepare future leaders in public health!

Join the BPH Slack Workspace & the OOMPH WhatsApp Group

We were thrilled to see the announcement below from a residential MPH student about a new Slack workspace for BPH students. We hope our OOMPH students are taking the opportunity to create channels for their concentrations, study groups, interests, etc.

We also learned about the OOMPH WhatsApp Group, which you can join at the following link:

If there's another way you'd like to be able to connect with your fellow students and you think the program could help (e.g. an online platform subscription), please let us know!

My name is Whitney and I'm a third-year MPH/MCP student. Last year I made the Berkeley Public Health Slack workspace to have a way for us BPH grad students to connect more casually :)

Here's the link to join: https://join.slack.com/t/bphgrads/signup

There are channels for each public health program (e.g. HSB, Epidemiology, HPM, etc.) so you can find and join your program's channel to connect with other students in your program. Feel free to create new channels if I missed a program or if you have other topics you want to connect with others over like specific classes or #pets!

Not sure how to use slack?

See you around BWW!

Cheers,

Whitney

D-Lab Session Recording

The Social Sciences Data Lab, or D-Lab, provided an overview of their FREE training and consulting services for graduate students for the OOMPH community on September 8th. Thank you to all who attended! If you were unable to attend, you can view a recording of the event on the Student Gateway here (the presentation slides are up now and the video will be posted in the next day or two)

D-Lab strives to help scholars from any discipline or background overcome barriers that might impede their success in applying computational tools and methods to their research. They offer consultations for students to discuss anything from analytical assistance and research design to software troubleshooting. Students can easily schedule an appointment if they know which one of our consultants they would like to meet with (here is a list of all of them along with their skillset) or they can drop-in to our front desk on zoom, where a consultant is always present and can help them in real-time. We encourage you to check out their presentation and learn about what services are available for you!

Mindfulness Mondays

Join Liza Schlosser-Olroyd for a little breather - a Monday Mindfulness Moment - at 12:10 p.m. As we continue working through unprecedented times in many ways, developing a mindfulness practice is a nourishing way to fill our cups back up and cultivate resilience over time. This is a chance to come together and share a mindful moment with one another before we take on the rest of our week. Hope to see you there!

Add this weekly breather to your bCal!

Mindfulness Mondays are offered as part of the the Be Well at Work program from University Health Services.
