NIH Instrumentation Grant Programs 2023

Pre-applications are now being accepted by the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) for NIH Shared Instrumentation Grants (S10) and the High-End Instrumentation Grants (HEI) Program

The NIH ORIP's Shared Instrumentation Grant (S10) program, also known as a SIG, supports the purchase of research equipment in the $50,000 to $600,000 price range. Examples of instrumentation supported by SIG funding include nuclear magnetic resonance systems, electron and light microscopes, mass spectrometers, protein and DNA sequencers, biosensors, X-ray diffractometers and cell sorters. For research equipment exceeding the $600,000 price range, investigators may apply for the High-End Instrumentation (HEI) Grant Program.

The MGH Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) has again committed funding to provide institutional support this year for Shared Instrumentation Grant (S10) and High-End Instrumentation (HEI) Grant  proposals. ECOR has made this commitment because it recognizes that institutional support greatly increases the likelihood that an application will be funded.

The Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences provides funding to young investigators of outstanding promise in science relevant to the advancement of human health. The program makes grants to selected academic institutions to support the independent research of outstanding individuals who are in their first few years of their appointment at the Assistant Professor level.

The Massachusetts General Hospital Nurses’ Alumni Association (MGHNAA) Grant

The MGHNAA grant is supported and named for the Alumni Association of the MGH School of Nursing (1873-1981) whose mission is to support nursing education, professional development, research, community engagement and to record and maintain the history of nursing at Massachusetts General Hospital. The MGHNAA is a 2-year grant that offers a Doctor of Nursing Practice program or an advanced practice nurse graduate of a Master of Science in Nursing program the opportunity to lead a clinically-relevant EBP, Quality Improvement, or Original Research project. The project should aim to advance nursing science and improve outcomes for nursing workforce, patients, or families. The grant provides up to $3000 for project related expenses.

Selection Criteria:

• Applicant is a Registered Nurse graduate of a Doctor of Nursing Practice program or an advanced practice nurse graduate of a Master of Science in Nursing program.
• Proposed project is EBP, Quality Improvement, or Original Research with potential for translation of results into practice. NOTE: Original Research submissions are limited to MSN Advanced Practice Nurse applicants only and a PhD-level Nurse Scientist mentor is strongly recommended.
• Applicant is a registered nurse employed at least 20 hours per week at MGH.
• Applicant is endorsed by his/her MGH Director.
• Applicant must be able to complete the project within the award period of 2 years.

Breast Cancer Alliance – Young Investigator Grants

Internal applications are now being accepted by the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) for the Breast Cancer Alliance Young Investigator Grant.

What are they?

"The mission of the Breast Cancer Alliance (BCA) is to improve survival rates and quality of life for those impacted by breast cancer through better prevention, early detection, treatment and cure. To promote these goals, the BCA invests in innovative research, breast surgery fellowships, regional education, dignified support and screening for the underserved. To encourage a commitment to breast cancer research, the sponsor invites clinical doctors and research scientists whose primary focus is breast cancer research, and who are in the early stages of their career, to apply for funding for the Young Investigator Grant. This grant is intended to help advance the careers of young researchers who do not yet have their own major grant support but who design and conduct their own independent research projects.”

MGH is eligible to nominate two candidates.

How much is the award?

The grant provides salary support and project costs for a total of $125,000 (distributed over the two-year period.) Indirect costs, which are included in the $125,000 award, must be limited to 8% of total direct costs.

For MGH investigators selected through a competitive process as the institutional nominee for any limited submission funding opportunities, in situations in which the grant will bring in less than 20% indirect cost (IDC), ECOR will cover the IDC gap up to a maximum of $50,000 per year. In order to optimize the distribution of limited ECOR funds across the MGH research community, it is expected that PIs and departments will work together to cover the remaining IDC shortfall.

Breast Cancer Alliance – Exceptional Project Grants

Internal preliminary applications are now being accepted by the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) for the Breast Cancer Alliance Exceptional Project Grant.

What are they?

The Breast Cancer Alliance invites clinical doctors and research scientists at any stage of their careers whose primary focus is breast cancer to apply for an Exceptional Project Grant. This award recognizes creative, unique and innovative research.

MGH is allowed to submit a maximum of 2 LOIs to the sponsor.

How much is the award?

The award is $100,000 for one year. Administrative costs, which are included in the $100,000 award, must be limited to 8% of grant funds. ECOR policy states that for MGH investigators selected through a competitive process as the institutional nominee in which the grant will bring in less than 20% indirect cost (IDC), ECOR will cover the IDC gap up to a maximum of $50,000 per year.

Fund for Medical Discovery (FMD) Research Fellowship Awards

Applications are now being accepted by the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR) for the Fund for Medical Discovery (FMD) Research Fellowship Awards!

What are they?

The FMD Awards are intended to support the salary of junior investigators (MD and PhD Research fellows, Clinical Research Fellows, Instructors), during a one-year period at MGH, who are in the training phase of their research. We recognize that research at MGH integrates the full translational spectrum of discovery from "bench to bedside to community and population.” To ensure that all areas of research conducted at MGH are included and eligible for FMD fellowship awards, ECOR is offering 3 types of training awards: fundamental research fellowships, clinical research fellowships, and population health care sciences fellowships.

These fellowships are for MD and PhD Research Fellows and Clinical Research Fellows who are in the training phase of their research at MGH. Instructors who are within 5 years total since initiating their research fellowship training are only eligible to apply for the clinical and population health care sciences fellowships. 

How much is each award?

The award will include a stipend of $54,840 plus applicable fringe benefits and 20% indirect costs.

Mass General Brigham Precision & Genomic Medicine T32 

We are pleased to announce that the Mass General Brigham Training Program in Precision & Genomic Medicine, supported by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), is now accepting applications for the 2023-2025 academic cycle.

The MGB Training Program in Precision & Genomic Medicine, co-led by Jordan W. Smoller, MD, ScD, and Heidi Rehm, PhD, brings together three outstanding components to build a world-class training program in precision and genomic medicine: 1) an internationally-recognized faculty with expertise in precision and genomic medicine across a broad range of disciplines, 2) outstanding institutional resources bridging clinical, genomic, and data sciences, and 3) deep engagement with cutting edge, collaborative initiatives at the regional, national, and international levels to provide rich training experiences.

Funding is for 2-years and awards cover salary, travel to professional meetings, and other training-related expenses.

Trainees will perform research in their respective Mentor’s lab but will participate in all T32 training related requirements (meetings, journal club, etc.) throughout the Mass General Brigham Healthcare System.

The Nutrition Obesity Research Center at Harvard (NORCH) is currently seeking applications for Pilot & Feasibility Grants related to nutrition, obesity, and metabolism. 2023 Charles A. King Trust Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Award

What are they?

The purpose of the fellowship award is to support research that focuses on the causes of human disease with the mission of improving its treatment. The program provides funding to postdoctoral fellows and clinician scientists in the mid to late stages of their research training in basic and preclinical science, and clinical and implementation research to help them achieve their goals of becoming independent investigators in biomedical research.

This opportunity is open to senior postdoctoral researchers and mentored clinician-scientists (MD, DO or equivalent) who work in the state of Massachusetts. 

How much is the award?

Ranging from $194,100 to $215,000 total over two years, inclusive of a $25,000 annual flexible expense allowance.

Applications for grants are invited by the MGH Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI), and the Executive Committee on Research (ECOR). 

What is the Award?

The MGH Physician and/or Scientist Development Award (PSDA) is designed for MD and/or PhD investigators at MGH who are considered underrepresented in academic medicine (UiM). This Award is intended to provide transitional funding for support in the development of physicians and scientists underrepresented in academic medicine, and thereby increase opportunities for UiM researchers to advance to senior positions in academic medicine at MGH. This award is a key faculty initiative of the CDI. We encourage applicants to engage with the center and learn more about our programs and other initiatives: www.massgeneral.org/cdi. The CDI will evaluate the need for this Award on a regular basis.

Am I UIM (Underrepresented in Medicine)?

For the purposes of the PSDA, MGH follows the definition of underrepresented in medicine and biomedical research (UiM) of the NIH and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). UiM groups may include Latino/ Hispanic (including Brazilian), African-American/Black, American Indian, Native Hawaiian and Alaskan Natives, among others. Please note that Asians are not considered UIM, UNLESS they are underrepresented relative to the population MGH serves, e.g., Cambodian or Laotian.

Connell Postdoctoral Fellowship in Nursing Research

The Yvonne L. Munn Center for Nursing Research at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is inviting nurse applicants for the second postdoctoral fellow for the Connell Postdoctoral Fellowship in Nursing Research established in 2019. This is a unique opportunity for early-career nurse researchers within two years of completing a PhD degree (graduation year 2022 or 2023) to receive postdoctoral training at MGH, the leading independent hospital in NIH funding.

The fellowship provides developmental support and resources to advance nursing research in:

Symptom Science in Adults- including the identification of symptoms and symptom management in the context of acute and chronic illnesses among diverse populations.

*Applicants with an interest in women’s health and women living with HIV strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants with an interest in nutrition and obesity research also encouraged.

Highlights of the Connell Postdoctoral Fellowship include:

Howard Hughes Medical Institute Competition to Select HHMI Investigators

The HHMI Investigator competition is open to basic researchers and physician scientists from more than 300 eligible institutions who catalyze research in basic and biomedical sciences, plant biology, evolutionary biology, biophysics, chemical biology, biomedical engineering, and computational biology.

Candidates apply directly to HHMI. Applications must be received by March 21, 2023. Information about this program and competition, including benefits of becoming an HHMI Investigator and eligibility requirements for this competition may be found at hhmi.org/investigators.

We seek a broad applicant pool and welcome applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We anticipate appointing approximately 25 scientists who will push the bounds of biomedical research and train and mentor the next generation of scientists.

For research investigators, and study staff, this 45-minute course will help you better understand and access internal resources and tools that will help you advance your research initiatives. The second class in the three-part Digital Research Education series is focusing on the Digital Health Research Tools at MGH/MGB. This course will present an overview of the useful research tools available at MGB, including information sources, software, trainings, informational documents and more. At the end of the course, each participant will receive a carefully curated, comprehensive catalogue of almost 40 research tools.

The final course in the three-part Digital Research Education series is intended to provide a roadmap to help you navigate the hospital’s research support structure and understand the regulations and procedures involved. At the end of the course, each participant will receive a comprehensive guide of the research steps involved, including topics such as Project Development, Contracts and Agreements, IRB and Data Security Review, and Project Implementation. This course was developed by the Center for Innovation in Digital HealthCare (CIDH).

"Subcortical brain regions in anxiety disorders: Findings from ENIGMA-Anxiety"

The Anne Klibanski Visiting Lecture Series was created to support and advance the careers of women. These lectures offer the opportunity for women faculty from outside institutions that have hosted Anne Klibanski Scholars to present on their expertise, either alone or in tandem with an Anne Klibanski Scholar.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

·       Identify subcortical brain regions implicated in major anxiety disorders

·       Recognize sex and age as potential modifiers of subcortical volumes in anxiety disorders

·       Distinguish between different types of data aggregation in large-scale neuroimaging collaborations
