Memorial Day is the day we set aside each year to honor, pay tribute to, and remember those who, while serving in our nation’s military, have paid the ultimate price and never returned home.
And we need not look further back in time than last August for a very fresh reminder of that sacrifice – the thirteen U.S. service members killed in action at the airport gate in Kabul, Afghanistan, on August 26, 2021.
The sacrifice on that fateful day, by eleven Marines, a Navy corpsman, and an Army Sergeant, two women and eleven men, none older than 25 years old, allowed others they were protecting to escape to freedom.
Freedom. The watchword of sacrifice.
Those whose lives ended in service to the nation on August 26, 2021, are the latest, but most assuredly not the only, who deserve remembrance for that sacrifice.
Every sacrifice of life made by members of our nation’s military throughout the years is the price paid to defend and maintain our freedom as Americans and to protect and free others.
Therefore, I am joined by my colleagues on the Hunterdon County Board of Commissioners in encouraging everyone to take time on May 30, 2022, to recognize the sacrifices made, to reflect on the cost and the value of our freedoms, and to commemorate Memorial Day as something more than just another holiday.
