FREE “Level One” Certi-Fire Training Tuition Limited-time Offer

With the continued support of Employment Ontario under the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD), Electrical Contractors Association of Ontario (ECAO) received a second round funding from the Provincial Skills Development Fund (SDF) for the Certi-Fire program to enhance its training capabilities in the fire alarm industry.

In Spring 2021, the Certi-Fire program received the first round of SDF funding to expand the courses in a COVID-19 friendly environment, by delivering programs online to accommodate “at-home-learning” for the “in-person-classroom” training. It was a great achievement for Certi-Fire!

The second round of SDF funding allows us to develop Virtual Reality (VR) Certi-Fire Lab Assessment; where a wearable device allows participants to learn to wire a fire panel, is currently under way.

Good news about this VR technology - we will be able to provide training in an innovative method that will eliminate the traditional need for large physical spaces and large capital investments. It will also resolve the indoor setting limitations and the geographical issues that were a barrier due to COVID-19.

ECAO is pleased to offer a limited, one time, opportunity for free LEVEL ONE Certi-Fire Training for IBEW members, and individuals who are 309A licensed electricians, or minimum third term apprentices with intermediate trade school. This promotion is on a first-come-first served basis, and applies to Level 1 only, within the given period of time. This free tuition offer will end on March 31, 2023 or until the seats are filled, whichever comes first.

*** Don’t miss this chance to become a Certi-Fire Fire Alarm Electrician who can provide one stop electrical services – install, test, verify, and maintain all fire alarm needs!!! ***

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by email at contactus@certifire.org

While she holds a degree in political science, the electrical business is in her blood.

“My family are all electricians,” she said in an interview Friday.

“Growing up, we were always at the office helping.”

Gray grew up in Athens and how lives in Lansdowne with her husband.

She was a junior shareholder at Industrial Electrical Contractors Limited, which sold to Modern Niagara in 2016. The family bought it back in 2018 and she has been running it ever since.

Are you using the latest Ontario Electrical Safety Code edition?

If you are using the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC), you should ensure you have the latest edition on hand. The 28th edition of the OESC (2021) is now incorporated by reference into regulations for electrical installation in Ontario.

The OESC (28th edition/2021) combines the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I (CSA C22.1:21), and Ontario-specific amendments of CSA C22.1:21 to enhance electrical safety and help protect electrical workers and the public in the province. The important updates in the 28th OESC edition include:

  • clear electrical safety installation requirements for energy storage systems;
  • guidance for electrical installations in flood hazard zones;
  • requirements for electrical installations in buildings housing livestock;

and, in Ontario, also the requirements for:

  • mitigating the potential for shock or electrocution when structures are erected in close proximity to customer-owned powerlines
  • keeping reduced conductor sizes for services and feeders for dwelling units by following current installation practices

Is Your Eye on the Horizon or on the Map?

ALMOST AS CONTENTIOUS AS THE CHICKEN AND EGG DEBATE, "Are managers and leaders the same?" has been pondered for years. The terms can be used interchangeably. There are some similarities between "leadership" and "management," but there are far more differences. Just because you are a manager doesn’t mean you are in leadership, and just because you are a leader doesn’t mean you are in management. Most successful companies have a healthy mix of managers, leaders and a few individuals who work effectively as both. A vital component of this success formula is the right balance between them.

Calling ECAO Members for Prompt Payment and Adjudication Testimonials

The use of adjudication under Ontario’s Construction Act has been quite low since the Act was passed into law, and adjudication became available to contractors to secure payment several years ago. In large part, this is the result of extremely low awareness of adjudication across our industry.

To combat this low level of understanding of adjudication in our industry, COCA is developing an awareness campaign to inform contractors.

To form part of our campaign, we are seeking positive testimonials about the adjudication process. Testimonials will be an important and compelling element in our campaign.

We are hoping that some of the member contractors who might are interested in providing COCA with positive testimonials about adjudication under the Construction Act. Please let us know if you are interested to provide an endorsement?
