TIME TO PLAN

It s time to plan your Spring installation. Unfortunately,  the "Polar Vortex" we experienced over the week of Christmas and New Year's Eve, killed a lot of plants and flowers.

It has been nearly 30 years since a polar vortex of this magnitude hit our area. Most of the plants that were injured during the Holidays polar vortex are (not limited to) camellia's, roses, southern magnolias, boxwoods, crepe myrtles, and southern hollies.

TIPS OF THE MONTH

When is the good time to trim Crepe Myrtles?

The proper time to prune Crepe Myrtle is late winter (January-February). Since Crepe Myrtles form their flowers on new growth, there is no danger of removing already-formed buds.

Fun fact: If you are wondering which spelling is correct (Crape Myrtle, Crapemyrtle, Crepe Myrtle, or Crepemyrtle), they are all acceptable and any may be seen on plant tags, in an article or web search.

What is GA planting zone?

When buying plants, or searching for inspiration, it is always good to know what planting zone we are in. Most of Georgia falls into Zone 8, with only mountainous north Georgia remaining Zone 7.

We recommend plants labeled to grow in Zone 7 and warmer and I think most gardeners will have success with them.

Winter ideas for your garden?

  • Take advantage of Winter sales. Many stores offers end-of-season specials to stock up on gardening supplies for the new year. You will find a lot of great deals out there or online on tools, furniture, and gardening-related products.
  • Time to plant outdoor as seeds: All of these plants can be started in February as seeds! Remember to use your best judgment! You may need to wait for a few weeks as it’s been a particularly cold or wet winter.
  • It is a good time for Spinach, Lettuces (You’ll want to choose leaf lettuces and hardier varieties), Beets, Carrots,. Turnips, Peas, and Radishes.

PROJECTS WE DID IN JANUARY

January is usually a slower month, but we were still pretty busy:

  • Of course, we took care of our lawn maintenance clients. The weather has been very difficult to work with, but we have managed to perform our services. We really appreciate our clients patience and understanding as our schedule is evolving with the weather.

  • We installed a new deck and steps. We had to be patient with DeKalb County to submit the permit, but it was worth the wait. Check our Facebook page for more pictures of the architect plan, and before and after pictures.

  • We installed another 10 tones of RipRap to finish up the erosion control issue our client had. Final number: 50 tones!!!! Yes, 50. Crazy right? We have another 40 tones of RipRap installation coming up this month at another client.

  • We installed plants and Bermuda Sod. Sod is dormant for now but will come out of dormancy in the Spring. The backyard looks already better.

  • We created a slate pathway and wood steps, with a drain system underneath (can't see on picture). We also installaed a water spigot by a vegetable garden for the client to water her veggies/ plants easily.

  • We did a plants and mulch installation and also installed a small paver landing. We also added stepping stones in the backyard heading to a shed.

  • We replaced and installed a small fence, and wood steps at the end of a driveway. It was installed on top of a retaining wall we did couple years ago.

  • We layed a lot more premium long needle pine straw and mulch during the month of January.

  • We are sponsoring a local Soccer team, in which several of our guys play in. Click HERE to check what else we do to support our community.

  • This February, we are working on a front landscaping makeover, a front porch redo, a new fence, lots of RipRap, a driveway extention, and several other smaller landscaping projects.
  • Check our March newsletter for pictures and details.

Do you know about us?

NLC was created over 23 years ago by Christopher Wood. Christopher grew up in Decatur, GA. As a teenager, he was mowing his neighbor's yards on the weekends, using his mother's old mower. He always like being outdoors and being productive. After a while, he was able to afford a better mower and a blower. That was the beginning of Neighborhood Lawn Care. He put flyers in mailboxes, and with referrals, word to mouth, he started to develop his little side job into a real part time job while going to college.

Slowly, he was able to buy a trailer, and service other neighborhoods in the Decatur area.

In 2003, Christopher married Stephanie, near Paris in France. Stephanie was born in France. They met back in 1994 when Stephanie was in Atlanta for an exchange student program. Before coming to the U.S. she was an account executive in an advertising firm in Paris. In 2004, she joined him with NLC and used her business, marketing and advertising background to help him develop the business. She took over the books, scheduling, advertising, and marketing. Stephanie even worked the yards, doing lawn maintenance. She worked the yards along Christopher until she was expecting their first child Ellie. At the end of 2005, they employed their first crew member to help Christopher.

Christopher always showed an interest in landscaping, hardscaping, irrigation, and everything yard related. He started to study, read, attend landscaping, and design classes, hardscape installation classes, and irrigation system repair and installation classes at John Deer Landscape school. He watched other contractors, learned from them and practiced. With time, he was able to add more services to Neighborhood Lawn Care portfolio. Taking the business from a lawn maintenance only, to a full landscaping company.
