Visual 1st Perspectives

Our choice of panel topics and speakers for Visual 1st – and why we picked them

With just 3 weeks to go until our 10th annual edition of Visual 1st, Oct. 4-5, I’d like to address a question we’re often asked: how do you select the topics and speakers for your conference?

[This is part 1 of a series of 2. Stay tuned for part 2 in which I’ll describe our reasoning behind our Fireside Chat topics and speakers.]

This is what drives our choices:

  • We try to include topics that have both technology and business innovation aspects.

  • Furthermore, our preference is for topics that involve potential for industry collaboration or partnerships.

  • We also seek topics that are trending in mindshare among our attendees – not to jump on the “trend du jour”, but to facilitate informed conversations among industry peers as to if, why and how these trends might matter and should feature in strategic planning.

And here is where things are getting increasingly challenging. I’ll get to this in my keynote, but Alexis and I have never before witnessed quite the fast-evolving carousel of “next big things” rolling in over each other that we’ve seen in the past 12 months.

Remember last year when NFTs were the next big thing?

6 months ago: the Metaverse?

And right now it is generative AI that many observers – yes, including us – believe will have a profound impact on our industry.

Let’s walk you through our choices.

This year's panels

Seeing Double: Turning photo-only apps into photo + video apps

For quite a few years now we’ve held that videos would – and then eventually did – take off among consumers.

But what if you’re already a successful photo app developer?

How do you address the opportunities raised by this growing market? Add video features to your photo-first app? Develop a separate video app? And how to succeed against video-first competitors? We’ll hear from 4 high-profile photo-first app developers who have all expanded into video one way or another.

Fighting back:

Enforcing visual content rights in the age of deepfakes and rip-off NFTs

Image creators have gotten tired of seeing their work being used, or even sold, by others without compensation or even credit. The proliferation of deepfake images and NFTs make the need to protect visual content rights even more urgent.

The good news: the industry is coming together to develop standards as well as practical solutions to detect and counteract illegal use.

We’ll hear from 4 panelists working at the center of these initiatives.

Turning Green:

Taking photo print sustainability practices to the next level

We all know why climate change matters, and why the production and shipping of photo print products must be re-engineered from the ground up to substantially reduce their carbon footprint. At our Visual 1st Sustainability Spotlight event in June companies from different parts of the photo print product supply chain shared a range of initiatives they’ve taken to reduce waste, pollution and carbon footprint.

Having discussing the “what” (can you do) then, we’ll now dive into the “how.”

We’ll hear from sustainability experts on how to reliably measure the environmental impact of photo print-related activities, what resources to deploy to most effectively and efficiently obtain results, and how to provide accountability and transparency towards one’s customers.

Empowering shopping:

Seizing emerging opportunities where visual content is king

How to best monetize innovative photo & video technology? While the answer to this question has shifted over the years and may differ for specific technologies, we’ve recently seen quite a few companies successfully monetizing their imaging applications by catering to the e-commerce needs of large brands and SMBs.

Which begs the question: what are today’s trending solutions and tomorrow’s untapped opportunities?

We’ll hear from trailblazers who are pushing the envelope of e-commerce imaging tools through scalable photo editing, AR innovation, video clip creation, and integration of professional imagery with user-generated content.
