Member Spotlight
Tracey Smith-Canton Professional EA
ECOEA Minority Member
ECOEA Social Justice Committee Chairperson
Greetings ECOEA members!
Diversity and social justice are essential to the climate and culture of our schools. I, along with the members of the Social Justice Committee, have actively promoted this belief through our work. Both of our nominees, Officer Sharpe and Renee Powell, were awarded the OEA Charles A. Glatt Human and Civil Rights Award due to their progressive efforts regarding social justice in our local communities. We also partnered with GLSEN NEO for a summer leadership session to assist educators with supporting their LGBTQ+ students. Outreach events within your communities can provide an opportunity to engage with the families of diverse communities and invite others to experience their rich culture. The Canton City Schools Hispanic Heritage Celebration is an example of a district looking to create a positive climate and culture through a shared experience within their community. Whether you create an event for Hispanic Heritage Month or for another community within your local area, I encourage you to utilize outreach events to support the diverse climate and culture that comprise your districts.
¡Felíz Mes de la Herencia Hispana!
You can see pictures from the Hispanic Heritage Celebration at Canton City Schools Gibbs Elementary Facebook page at this link. Consider applying for an OEA Foundation Diversity Grant of up to $3,000 to initiate a diversity project at your school. Deadline to apply is February 10, 2024.
