Decolonizing Humanities Curriculum

October 5, 2022 - 9 am to 12 pm

In partnership with the SRI&ETTC, Murphy Writing of Stockton University is offering an in-service workshop on decolonizing humanities curriculum for K-12 instructors. This workshop will offer strategies for approaching "controversial” subjects, i.e. how to decolonize writing instruction, including offering supplementary resources and texts to incorporate in the classroom when following a district's curriculum.

In this hands-on workshop, we'll practice discussion activities that can help students engage with difficult texts and topics and also develop authentic writing prompts and plans for feedback and assessment. The workshop will draw on texts including Asao Inoue's Antiracist Writing Assessment Ecologies and Felicia Rose Chavez's The Anti-Racist Writing Workshop. Participants will leave with new strategies for creating equitable, inclusive classroom discussions and planning writing instruction in humanities disciplines, as well as resources for learning more.

This workshop will support the ELA Anchor Standard for Speaking and Listening. Flexible communication and collaboration and work in line with the New Jersey Department of Education's efforts in Culturally Responsive Practices.

The Decolonizing Humanities Curriculum for Educators Workshop will be presented by Nancy Reddy.

Making the Mentoring Process More Meaningful

October 18, 2022

Effective May 5, 2014, the NJ Teacher Mentoring Regulations have been amended to better align with the TEACHNJ Act, and specifies that mentors need training prior to working with novice teachers and guiding experienced teachers that are new to the district.

In this workshop, mentors will explore the mentoring process and understand the requirements for working with novice teachers. Practical strategies, skills, information, and resources will be discussed that will help them to successfully mentor novice teachers and positively impact their professional growth. Through role playing, communication skills, and knowledge of adult learning principles, mentor teachers will be provided with resources that will not only help them to become effective mentors and role models, but will also expand their own professional expertise.

THE SEI ONLNE

A Free 15-Hour Course on Sheltered English Instruction

Developed by the SRI&ETTC Funded by the NJ Department of Education

Educating students who still are acquiring English proficiency can be complex in an age of high stakes evaluations and assessments as well as college and career-ready standards. English language learners (ELLs) are not monolithic in their educational background, cultural experiences, and ability to adapt to learning environments. However, through well-planned instruction, ELLs can attain challenging academic standards.
