Labor Day City Holiday Hours and Services: Monday, Sept. 5

In observance of Labor Day, all City of Garland offices, utility customer service and tax offices, librariesrecreation centers and senior centers will be closed Monday, Sept. 5.


The Charles M. Hinton Landfill and City of Garland Transfer Station and Recycling Center also will be closed. Garbage, recycling, and brush and bulky pickup schedules will not be impacted.


Firewheel Golf Park will remain open and operate its usual hours all weekend.


The Noon Exchange Club of Garland will host the 76th annual Garland Labor Day Parade at 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5. This year the parade will run north from Central Park on Glenbrook Avenue to Austin Street, turn right on Austin Street and end at Sixth Street. The route will bypass the Downtown Square due to construction, but Downtown businesses remain open.

Spring Creek Forest Guest Speaker Series Event Tuesday, Sept. 6

Join the Preservation Society for Spring Creek Forest via Zoom from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, for the next talk in their guest speaker series.


University of North Texas ecologist Jaime Baxter-Slye will talk about how she and her students have worked to reconstruct a native Texas prairie called the UNT Pollination Prairie located on the UNT campus.

Fair Fare on the Square Continues Downtown All Month Long

Fair Fare on the Square is back for a third year of fair-inspired fare and runs the entire month of September!


Cool off with a Dr Pepper slush or cotton candy iced tea, indulge in homemade Frito pie or a churro flight, or go all in for a deep-fried funnel cake Spam on a stick with blackberry maple jam. Of course, delicious house-made versions of fair-inspired classics like corn dogs, turkey legs and fried Oreos will also be available.


Participating eateries are located on Main, Fifth, Sixth and State streets.

Band Together on the Square Concert Series Continues at Plaza Theatre Friday, Sept. 9

City Council Meetings

Sept. 6

Due to the Labor Day holiday, the Garland City Council Regular Meeting and Work Session will be combined Tuesday, Sept. 6, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St. Work Session will begin at 5:30 p.m. and Regular Meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

Garland Community Mental Health Fair

Sept. 10

Join The Garland Public Health Department at the second annual Garland Community Mental Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at 618 Clara Barton Blvd. Get access to free mental health screenings and crisis planning, mental health and substance use information and resources, demonstrations, COVID vaccines and flu shots, and more! The fair is free but participants are asked to reserve their spots. Register now.


Garland Cultural Arts Commission 2022-23 Grant

Sept. 16

The Garland Cultural Arts Commission announces its 2022-23 Grant Program for local arts groups, historic preservation organizations and other artistic entities. Applications will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays through Sept. 15 at the Granville Arts Center Box Office, 300 N. Fifth St. Completed applications are due no later than 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at the Granville Arts Center. Interviews will take place Thursday, Sept. 22, at the Granville Arts Center. Grant money will not be awarded to any group failing to submit the completed application by the deadline. For more information, call 972-205-2780.


Neighborhood Vitality Matching Grant Applications

Sept. 23

The Neighborhood Vitality Matching Grant program enables registered neighborhood groups, both voluntary and mandatory, to apply for matching funds for physical enhancement projects in publicly accessible spaces. These projects encourage neighbors to work together to create projects unique to their neighborhood while boosting a sense of pride and ownership. Applications are due Friday, Sept. 23. Letter of Intent forms, applications and guidelines can be downloaded at GarlandNeighborhoods.org


Jynneos Vaccine for Monkeypox

Vaccination is for prevention of monkeypox only. People with confirmed cases of monkeypox or symptoms of monkeypox are not eligible to receive the vaccine. Vaccine remains in low supply and can currently only be offered to people who meet one of the criteria listed online. If you suspect you are at high risk, you may call 972-205-3370. More information on the vaccines used to protect against monkeypox virus can be found on the CDC website.

Firewheel Golf Park to Host PGA Jr. League Regional Championship Sept. 9-11

Eight 13-and-under all-star teams of junior golfers from Texas, New Mexico and Colorado will compete for the opportunity to advance to the PGA Jr. League National Championship in October, while eight 17-and-under teams will compete for the title of Regional Champion. Learn more.
