CLAS Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month was first observed in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and expanded to 30 days in 1988. Each year, from September 15 to October 15, we pause to pay special recognition to the achievements and contributions of Hispanic/Latine American champions who have inspired others to achieve success.

The theme for 2022 is Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation. This year's poster:

Sophia Lenhart

An undergraduate majoring in Portuguese and minoring in Human Rights, received a FLAS fellowship to study Portuguese.

Pachaysana Campus Visit

Daniel Bryan, Director of the Pachaysana Institute, will visit OSU October 24-26. Daniel's visit will feature a Global Education info session about Pachaysana study abroad opportunities and two workshops, described below. Daniel will also meet with classes and interested students and faculty.

CLAS Affiliates Receive
Innovation in Graduate Education Grant

CLAS faculty affiliates Nick Kawa and Yolanda Zepeda are part of an interdisciplinary team of OSU staff and faculty who received an Innovation in Graduate Education grant of nearly $500,000 from the National Science Foundation.

The grant will be used to pilot, test, and validate a project that trains graduate students to become wicked scientists-- researchers who can work effectively in transdisciplinary teams to tackle the complexities, uncertainties, and conflictive nature of wicked problems.

Former FLAS Fellows Receive
Fulbright U.S. Student Awards

Former CLAS FLAS fellows Micah Unzueta (Quechua) and Katriese DeLeon (Portuguese) have been awarded U.S. Student Fulbright Awards for the 2022-2023 academic year from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. Both students will hold English Teaching Assistantships, Micah in Peru and Katriese in Spain. Congratulations, Micah and Katriese!

The U.S. Student Fulbright competition for undergraduates is administered at OSU through the Undergraduate Fellowship Office. For more information, contact fellowships@osu.edu. Center for Ethnic Studies:
Student Travel & Research Grants

The Center for Ethnic Studies is pleased to announce its travel and research grants program for the 2022-2023 academic year!

CES awards a number of small grants every year to support students' research activities, conference participation, and financial need due to the pandemic. Travel plans are not necessary to apply for these grants.

All undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled in coursework for the Autumn 2022 term may apply. Proposals should demonstrate a substantial connection to one or more of the fields represented within the Center’s academic programs: American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, and/or Latina/o Studies, with preference given to those enrolled in CES' minor and GIS Programs.

Munthe receives Alumni Award

Susan P. Munthe has received the Ralph Davenport Mershon Award, granted by the OSU Alumni Association. This award is presented to alumni who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and service to the University.

Latin Americanists on campus will recognize Munthe's name. The Susan Pratt Munthe Fund for Latin American Studies, formerly coordinated by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, supported graduate student research in the region for many years.

Now coordinated by International Studies, the scholarship (currently accepting applications, through October 1) continues to support international research, with preference for students focused on Latin America.
