Each year on June 20th, we celebrate the courage and perseverance of refugees around the globe who have had to flee their homes to escape conflict or persecution. World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to turn our focus to the rights and needs of refugees.
World Refugee Day was first observed globally in 2001 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. Originally known as Africa Refugee Day, the United Nation's General Assembly officially designated it as an international day in December of 2000.
While World Refugee Day is just one day, Opening Doors is committed to supporting refugees on their path to stability, self-sufficiency, and belonging all year long. Earlier this year, Opening Doors had the privilege of helping to reunite a family that was separated while fleeing Kabul. Learn more about their story in the below video, "Welcome Home: Reuniting Families".
